Ah well, maybe one day I will read it all. I'm always surprised when I see a new name on this thread, pleasantly surprised, but surprised nonetheless, I never expect new readers to read over 40 chapters in one go just to get up to date with a fanfiction! Anyway, thanks for the attention, I hope you do get round to reading the whole thing, but I'll understand if you don't.

I do read the special. I love the final battle between Red and Blue.

Anyways, I curious as to where this Maxwell idea is going. It's very different from most adaptations so I have no theories.

Also, the scene of imaginary Oak fawning over Red and Blue just desperately wanting approval... it's so different than the usual thinking, but also so interesting and possible. You really are doing great in the character development stage.

Oh, I can't wait for the league where Oak tells Blue off.

Wowie to you too then! Thank you very much for being that devoted! Did you know that based on its current word count, it's the size of a small novel?

Anyone who reads Special is a good person. I've only read up to the end of the Emerald arc, but it's beautiful. My favourite bits of the first arc are Red, Blue and Green versus the Team Rocket Triad, Red v Giovanni and Red v Blue - all of them were spectacular.

And thank you very much for the compliment, I wasn't sure if that scene worked or not myself. And I'm afraid you're going to have to wait a while for that particular scenario =P, after the Team Rocket distraction, Blue's got another 3 Badges to get before he can even set off towards the Elite Four!

Anyway, here is another chapter -

    Chapter 43

Pidgeotto wasn’t happy about carrying his own relatively light Trainer and a full grown and frankly overweight man across the sky, but ultimately, it respected its Trainer and it did it. Pidgeotto strained as it Flew Blue and Maxwell across Saffron City. It wasn’t long before Pidgeotto was able to drop them though, the Silph building wasn’t exactly difficult to locate, it’s only the biggest building in the whole of Saffron City. Blue figured he’d have to use his Rocket disguise to get in again, but apparently not – the only Rocket guarding the entrance to the building was a single Grunt who was asleep, just to the side of the door. Pathetic, really. It was almost as if it was designed to be accessed at this particular moment in time. Blue didn’t spend too long thinking about it though, he just went into the building.

The ground floor of the building was surprisingly under populated, in fact, there was no one on the entire floor. Blue wondered if now would be a good time to don his Grunt outfit and finally decided that it was. As Blue got his uniform gloves, boots, jumper and hat out of his bag and removed his normal clothes, Maxwell was understandably confused.

“What are you doing, kid?” asked the sailor.
“I’ve been prepared for this,” answered Blue, “I’ve got Grunt uniform with me, so I can run around the building undetected. I don’t know about you, but that makes sense to me.”
“But,” objected Maxwell, “I don’t have any uniform, if you hang out with me it’ll be obvious we’re not Rockets!”
“Alright,” smiled Blue, realising that he had inadvertently bettered his situation in more ways than one, “Then you wait here and I’ll go deal with Team Rocket. You stand guard.”
“But…” stammered Maxwell, “I only have Wartortle, how can I guard with one Pokémon that I can’t even get to evolve?”

Blue sighed and removed two random Poké Balls from his belt. Kadabra and Gyarados. He handed them to Maxwell.

“Wow, Blue!” exclaimed Maxwell, “Thanks! These Pokémon are awesome! I’ll definitely be able to fend off Rockets with these bad boys! Good luck upstairs!”

Blue wished Maxwell luck and ran upstairs, eager to disappear before the sailor’s euphoria over being able to command strong Pokémon for once wore off and he finally realised that what Blue had done amounted to little more than abandonment. This also meant that Blue didn’t have to beat Team Rocket, he could just find that Scientist, show him who’s boss and get the hell out of there. Even that would be easier said than done though, finding him in a building filled with Rockets would be hard enough, but beating the villainous man with a team that had been completely destroyed by him minus two Pokémon seemed damn near impossible. Blue hadn’t even improved much since the last time he battled this guy… what was he thinking? All that had happened was he’d lost a battle to Red, he hadn’t lost it badly, but he’d still lost it!

As Blue climbed the stairs, he noticed there were a lot of rooms which were locked and had card like slots to the side and he figured that they required some sort of Card Key to open. Blue guessed that not only would Boss Rocket be hiding himself behind one of those, but in all likelihood, the Scientist would be too, he seemed to be fairly senior. As Blue reached the third floor, he saw a tremendously large Grunt patrolling the floor.

    “Hey man!” shouted Blue daringly.
“Yes?” growled the enormous Grunt, who then looked Blue up and down, “Your uniform is terrible. If I were an Executive, I’d put you on poster duty.”
“Yeah,” replied Blue, beginning to let his nerves get the better of him, “Me too, I guess. Also, I’ve lost my Card Key, I was wondering if I could borrow yours?”

The Grunt looked at Blue with narrowed eyes and began to remove the desired object from his pocket.

“What are the aims of Team Rocket’s conquest of the Silph Company?” demanded the Grunt suddenly.

Blue was caught aback, he hadn’t expected to be tested – he had chosen this guy because he looked like a dumb brute, he thought he’d be able to enact his plan without a hitch, but apparently not. Blue stood silently as he contemplated his answer, but apparently he did so too long.

“You’re not a Rocket at all, are you?” demanded the gruff Grunt.

Blue still did not answer. This man was nowhere near as scary as the Scientist, but he was certainly intimidating.

“You a vigilante then?” questioned the Grunt.

Blue continued his silence, it was too late to redeem the situation now anyway, so he just grabbed a Poké Ball from his belt – Charmeleon.

“I’m going to beat you,” stated the Grunt, “And then I’m going to take your Pokémon away from you. Do you understand?”

The Grunt raised two Poké Balls, clearly he didn’t possess the ‘gentleman battler’ quality that the Scientist so proudly boasted. Blue grabbed a second Poké Ball himself – Pidgeotto. Blue could feel that he was in the clutches of Team Rocket now, a merciless gang of villains, losing now wasn’t like losing against a Gym Leader or losing against Red, that hurt Blue, but it only hurt his pride, Blue had a feeling that if he lost now, he’d end up hurting in a much more literal sense.

Blue’s Box: Metapod, Beedrill, Meowth, Bellsprout

    Blue’s Badges: 5

not bad. I seen now how Blue is getting that Alakazam, though I'm still not certain where you are going with this Maxwell thing.

I am a bit disappointed though. You had that mythology gag in there, about the sleeping rocket, but I half expected it to be Blue who put him to sleep, using Hypnosis and moving him to the side. But oh well. Still interesting and I liked the little scene at the end.

So he'll have an Alakazam, now all he needs is to evolve his Charmeleon and Pidgeotto and he'll be ready to face Red.

True, but I thought GM was sticking to the games' plot.

That's two of us now, but I bet GM wanted it to be like that so that Blue wouldn't seem as a noob when it came to moves. In Silph, his Charizard has like Leer, Ember and Rage at level 40.

Deviating from plot in order to give battles flair and substance is fine.

I can't wait to see how you deal with the Red battle in silph ... more over how Gary leaves after the battle knowing Red is trying to find Giovanni

I try to keep to the storyline for the most part, however I've been ignoring moves. For example, Blue's Pokemon don't know any HMs, which frankly is ridiculous, I'd have a tough time explaining him getting the Volcano Badge without obtaining Surf... But yeah, I've used my artistic license a bit when it comes to Badges. Anyway, big news, it's another chapter! Hooray!

    Chapter 44

The gigantic Grunt sent out his two Pokémon – a stone rhino, Rhyhorn and a purple pile of goo, Grimer, neither of them looked particularly threatening. Although Blue knew that Charmeleon and Pidgeotto weren’t excellent choices against a Rock type, he didn’t think these Pokémon were enough of a threat to justify him bothering to switch. This Grunt had the same look of ruthlessness in his eyes as the Scientist had had, but he didn’t have the same look of superiority, this guy knew he wasn’t number one, this guy knew he could be beaten. Blue found it hard to imagine the Scientist he had met deferring to even Boss Rocket, although he had no idea who this was, but he had no problems imagining this Grunt deferring to anyone.

The Grunt immediately grumbled some attacks to his Pokémon, who sprung into action. Grimer hit Charmeleon with some sort of toxic gunk, which didn’t really seem to do much, while Rhyhorn fired a huge rock at Pidgeotto, which gave the bird a considerable amount of damage. The attack was Rock Blast, which meant it was coming again.

“Fly!” ordered Blue, “Get out of the way!”

Pidgeotto immediately obeyed, Flying up above and avoiding another beating – one which it probably wouldn’t have been able to take. Rhyhorn launched one rock which went flying into a wall, causing the Grunt to become enraged. The Grunt then had his Pokémon take aim at Charmeleon. Blue knew that as a Fire type, Charmeleon wouldn’t be able to take much punishment from a Rock type.

“Pidgeotto!” yelled Blue desperately, “Come down, pick up Charmeleon and Fly back up!”

The Grunt grumbled with annoyance and ordered both Rhyhorn and Grimer to aim their attacks in the air. Blue was hoping for a miracle, his confidence in not having to change Pokémon was starting to seem a little misplaced now. Pidgeotto was still in the air with Charmeleon, simply avoiding being hit by rocks and Blue really wasn’t sure where to take the battle from here.

“Ember!” shouted Blue, giving the only order he could think of.

Launching Ember from above proved to be quite effective, due to the way the fire spread, the attack was actually able to hit both of the Grunt’s Pokémon and at the same time, ruin their aim, Blue’s double team were no longer visible. Blue kept this up, wondering how long Pidgeotto would be able to sustain itself in the air and praying that the Grunt’s Rhyhorn wouldn’t be able to miraculously hit an accurate Rock Blast at Blue’s Pokémon. In spite of his worrying though, Blue was impressed by the fortitude of his Pokémon, Charmeleon was keeping up an almost continuous stream of fire out of his mouth while Pidgeotto was keeping Charmeleon in the air for a spectacular amount of time. Blue cheered his Pokémon on, when suddenly, from behind the stream of fire, he could see that familiar white light – someone was evolving! Blue couldn’t tell whether it was Pidgeotto or Charmeleon at this point but the knowledge that one of his first two Pokémon ever had evolved was a huge breath of fresh air. However it didn’t last for long. Rhyhorn managed to hit a Rock Blast dead into the middle of the giant ball of fire, someone was hit. Blue could tell from the bird like cry that it was Pidgeotto… or Pidgeot. Blue hoped it was Pidgeotto. If it was Pidgeotto, that meant Charmeleon was the one who had evolved and it would no longer need Pidgeotto’s help to keep itself in the air.

As it happened, Blue was not in the dark on this matter for very long, as it appeared not only was Pidgeotto/Pidgeot hit by the Rock Blast, but knocked out by it. As the Pokémon plummeted towards the ground, it became obvious that it was no longer Pidgeotto, it was far larger and had slightly differently coloured plumage. One of Blue’s Pokémon evolving had never been worse news.

“Unlucky,” sneered the Grunt, it was obvious that he too had noticed one of Blue’s Pokémon evolve and was happy that it had been Pidgeotto.

Both Trainers also noticed a ball of fire hurtling towards the ground immediately after Pidgeot. Blue wasn’t sure why Charmeleon was falling after Pidgeot, but he supposed his starter had done the cowardly thing and jumped off Pidgeot’s unconscious body in order to remain in the air for those precious few seconds longer. At least he had had the guts to continue using Ember though, that was still causing Rhyhorn and Grimer a considerable amount of damage. As the ball of fire tumbled, both Rhyhorn and Grimer were able to take increasingly accurate shots at it, its pattern of flight was now infinitely more predictable that it was simply plummeting at an increasing speed. Then suddenly, it stopped plummeting. Instead of continuing towards the floor, the ball of fire sprang towards Rhyhorn and Grimer and out of the fire emerged a dragon like Pokémon – Charizard! Charizard had evolved too! Blue had never even heard of a simultaneous evolution before, let alone experienced one – and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Clearly Blue’s opponent wasn’t familiar with this phenomenon either, he simply stood there, dumbfounded, as Charizard flew towards his Rhyhorn, picked up and returned to the air. Charizard flew around right up against the roof of the building and dropped Rhyhorn, hitting it with a further Ember attack as it did so. As the stone rhino hit the ground, the pain became too much to bear and it fell unconscious. The Grunt was beginning to look worried now, Blue just smiled. Charizard launched one more Ember attack and that was too much for Grimer to bear.

“Now,” ordered Blue, “I want you to give me your Card Key.”
“Y-yes,” stammered the Grunt in deference, lowering his head meekly, all too aware that a dragon was standing right next to him, ready to burn him to a cinder if he disobeyed Blue, “Here you are.”

The Grunt handed Blue his Card Key and turned, hoping that he was now free to leave.

“Oh,” continued Blue, “Didn’t you say that if you beat me, you’d take my Pokémon from me?”

The Grunt had been hoping this wouldn’t come up.

“I want yours,” snapped Blue, “That was the deal, if I lost, you’d have taken my Pokémon. You lost, so I’m having yours.”

The Grunt handed over Rhyhorn and Grimer’s Poké Balls to Blue and hurried up the stairs, getting away from Blue.

Blue smiled and put his two new Pokémon on his belt. He guessed that this floor was guarded by such a large Grunt for a particular reason, Blue was sure that behind one of the doors on this floor, he would find Boss Rocket. That said, Blue didn’t necessarily want to find Boss Rocket, he wasn’t exactly in the mood to battle someone who was surely going to be even more terrifying than the absolutely petrifying Scientist who had literally killed one of Maxwell’s Pokémon. Although, on the other hand, if Blue headed in the direction that more senior members of Team Rocket were in, he’d be sure to meet up with that Scientist sooner or later, he just wished he could get Kadabra and Gyarados back from Maxwell before taking this guy on. Blue walked up to one of the doors requiring a Card Key on this floor and prepared to swipe it down the card slot, when he heard a voice behind him.

“Hey, Blue!” shouted Maxwell, “Wait up!”

Although Blue was slightly annoyed that Maxwell had disobeyed his instructions to wait outside, he was relieved that he’d be able to claim his Pokémon back from the sailor – he was going to need them if he was going to be going toe to toe with two of his toughest and most ruthless opponents yet – the Scientist and Boss Rocket himself!

    Yay, new chapter!

Nice double evo, I thought Charmeleon would evolve in the air, but you seemed to subvert that for a second. Nice. And now Maxwell probably is running because Kadabra disappeared and there was an Alakazam in its place. And now Blue has a Rhyhorn.
