Week 129: The Heavenly Mint Plant
(real tale: "Folktales from Japan" episode 62, story 3)
"In a certain village lived a couple who were very proud of their fields." Brock begins. "One day, they were preparing herbs to dry when one of the mint plants somehow grew huge in a matter of seconds..." He makes a form in the air so the audience has some idea of how big the plant got. "and spat out a giant seed. The couple were amazed at the huge mint plant, and eagerly dreamed of how much the leaves alone would sell for."
Interested murmurs fill the air as Brock continues "Inspired, the man planted the giant seed in hopes of getting more giant mint plants. A few days went by, and before long, the plant reached clear to the heavens. Even in the fall and the winter, it was still in bloom even though everything else has wilted."
He adds as an aside "Did I mention that there were tons of mint leaves on the huge plant?"
Giggles go up as Brock continues "The next day, they went to work harvesting the huge leaves. Eventually, the man picked so many and went so high up, he reached the heavens, where he came face to face with Raikou!"
Laughter fills the room as the audience pictures the man's and Raikou's reactions. "Raikou asked the man if the mint plant was his, as the rustling leaves had been annoying the Legendaries at night." Brock explains, calming the laughter. "The man said yes, but explained that Manaphy needed to wake up, as there had been little rain that year. Raikou didn't listen, and taught the man Manaphy's spellsong for rain...." He pauses to sing Rou iitsa ron selga vichii...
As if on cue, "rain" starts falling in the theater. "The two of them traveled around making storms." Brock explains. "Eventually, they came to his house, where the man was horrified to discover that his fields were all dry. He started singing the spellsong frantically, but the amount of water that resulted ended up drenching many of them."
The audience roars with laughter as the "rain" subsides. "Luckily, the man's encounter with Raikou was just a dream, and the woman had taken in the crops before it rained, so they were fine." Brock assures the audience. "The man noticed raindrops sparkling on the crops, as if they were the only place it rained."
He concludes "But the man decided not to tell his wife about his dream!"
Laughter and applause fill the air as Brock takes a bow...
