Funny thing is, I remember Jimmy Zoppi's James using this phrase at the end of the Zoroark Movie in the dub. XD.

He said something about "Diamonds and Pearls!" at the end of Ranger.

I'm betting when we get to the final BW movie he'll say something about X and Y too. rofl.

Seriously, though, it depends. I'm going to say yes and no like you did. :D

No. Although I find it amusing Clair is being plucked out of obscurity to appear again, although its obvious its because she's a dragon type Gym leader and they're connecting her to Iris.

I don't know if the quality would improve, but the ratings sure would. I mean, look at all the people who were so excited to see Dawn, Cythina, and Charizard return. (Even though Dawn's sucked) People were even happy to see Brock in Dawn's flashbacks and Misty in Ash's flashback. Imagine if they acctually appeared in person. The views would probably skyrocket, as long as they're better than Dawn's.

What were the ratings for Charizard's return episode in Japan anyway? Does anyone know?

    5.1% according to BW編第116話 - ポケモンWiki

It actually scored better than N's debut episode (Friend, his name is N!), which was around 4.3%, so we can't deny the fact that Charizard and the flashbacks contributed a lot to the show.

Some characters, if brought back, would doubtlessly improve the show, like Wobbuffet.

Others, we are used to getting replaced, so it's not a big deal. We can survive without Misty, for example, because she has had a long string of successors. But we have never had a "Wobbuffet #2"

Yeah. I actually kinda like Zoppi's puns sometimes. Most of the time I don't and kinda hate them, but occasionally they're funny. :)

So long as it's not, "Dig it! Jack!" or an alliteration or assonance, he actually cranks out half-decent stuff.

I just have to say I agree with Pokemon fan 132. They made Dawn and TR way better than they were back in DP - no reason they can't do that for an older character, especially when many other shows can do the same AND keep us invested.

Some people would disagree with you about that, Dawn's team never changed and her clothes were the same and she lost to Iris, hey it was nice to see her again either way.
I think Team Rocket is screwed up man, at least back in D/P series they were just comical, BW it seemed like they were confused what they wanted.
Now, next series I think they'll be back to being comical like they are in DA.

    edit;

I think, if they brought back the most popular characters in the series it would make more people watch the series, don't know about improving but it'd make fans happy.
Ash fan. Multi Ash shipper =]

The actual writing of the show will be the same whether Ash travels with Misty or the new XY girl. But what the XY girl has over Misty is freshness, so new is better in a show like this.

I liked Dawn a lot more in DP. Her appearance in BW was virtually pointless. It didn't contribute to her journey and she was basically there to be instant BFFs with Iris just before she was tossed aside for her overpowered Dragonite. With Team Rocket, the idea of them being serious was actually pretty good, but just poorly handled. They kept going back and forth between being more serious and more comical as if they didn't know what to do with them. At least now, they're back to being comical. If an older character reappearing had the same level of quality as Dawn's cameo arc, then it wouldn't improve the show's quality.

Dawn didn't do anything of interest or make much progress between the end of DP and her cameo, but I thought she became more interesting. For TR, they were good in BW before the constant shifting from "comical" to serious.

If the writers aren't stupid the show would improve with or without them. Even if they bring back Paul in BW, if the writing is bad, the show's quality won't improve regardless of how we all like Paul.

Anything new companion brings, older one can bring better whether its interaction between characters, pokemon, character development or influence they can leave on plot since they already have history and foundation on which they passed basic introduction point allowing to be taken on new levels developing them in deeper way.

As such it would be refreshing for change to see characters we grew to like coming back with new life added to them through new outfits, change of style being updated, new pokemon, and new twists and plots to their storyline being taken in new/fresh directions , rather than going through another rehash of what we saw before.

Many long absent characters(like Misty as you mentioned) were away for so long that nowadays people would view them as "pseudo.new"finding refreshing to see continuation of their story being made.
Such as building on friendship with Ash and other characters already having history behind themselves, explore more on her past and issues which she either didn't overcome or has yet to find out that she has them through new twists injected in her story are flaws, advance her water master career and rank up as trainer by entering tournaments which could help to push her forward like Whirl Cup was, learn new ways of battling and how to improve her strategy by contacting other specialists and gaining more growth,go on venture trying to pass tasks and become E4 or champion like Wallace apprentice honing skills under their custody in attempt of becoming elite trainer living up to idol Lorelei Etc, etc.

Which results in more substantial development, more engaging battles, more complex storyline and creates fresh potential which is waiting to be explored taking someone to bigger and better things. Something you cannot do with rookies, new girls which are just starting out.

As well sets up groundwork for more profound story with stable cast and strong continuity creating brand around themselves and loyal viewers who are interested to see how will things resolve with those they grew to like and increase its reputation through positive reception and hype such things cause.

Way i look at it you can't establish on going plot which transfers itself to new regions, build on relationship with characters, have them go through more substantial growth by doing sequel and have continuity based show which keeps its ties with history making journey more believable by constantly replacing characters.

Since every character and every story they came up with which was developed to the point where you can take them to new level doing more complex development got scrapped in favor of new companions going all over again with similar formulaic approach they have been using for past 12 years.

Which instead of improving series lead toward shallow plot, writers laziness of not being forced to invest more in those they created coming up with new, innovative twists and static development which goes nowhere.
