Default The Pros and Cons of 4kids

Seeing as 4kids is running on empty and going down the crapper, it's time we looked back on their Pokemon dub and discussed what they did right with it and what they did wrong with it.

    My Pros:
1.Voice acting was good and got better
2.Dub music was generic but had a charm to it.
    3.Dialogue had cheesy appeal.
4.Stayed true to the story in translation to English for the most part.

    Cons:
1.The whole Riceball change. Not to beat a dead horse but what the HELL, 4kids!?
2.Unneeded visual edits and music replacements
3.Errors in script translations and unneeded changes.
    4.More to come.

    What about you?

    Pros.

Voices were very fitting for the characters.
The dialogue was delivered well by the VAs.
The dialogue was often very humorous.
The extra 'shippy' bits they added.
The themes were always very catchy.

    Cons:

    Rice balls became donuts.
Brock was replaced because of their stupid concerns regarding racial stereotyping.
They cut all of Misty's slaps out XD

That's about it. Lots more positives than negatives in my opinion.

I still didn't like how they changed the music more and more as the series went on. Kanto and Orange kept a lot of Japanese music, but from Johto onward they started replacing a lot more.

I actually started watching some random AG episodes in Japanese for the first time around a few years ago, and I was surprised at how different Hoenn felt in the Japanese version. It really did feel like a whole new series in the original, whereas the dub just kinda made Hoenn the, "6th season," and left it at that.

Music replacement that got worse starting with the 4th season; The musics themselves weren't bad, but they were generic and many times one tune was used more than once throughout an episode.
Destroyed the 1t movie and Chronicles.

As you see, the number of positives and negatives is actually the same xD

I respect your opinion, and 4Kids did indeed have a lot of good points that stand out comparing to today (dialogue and openings, like it was already said), but there were more bad points than those you pointed out.

Another con is every filler character sounded the same.

Liza Ortiz played almost every other female COTD of the show. It made Johto even more tedious when almost every girl sounded the same. Likewise almost every little boy on the show sounded the same.

I will admit Pokemon was perhaps the best dubbing job they ever did, but that is not to say that didn't have things they should be flogged for. The scripting was still good for the most part, and while I did like the 4Kids openings better, I will not entirely say the current dubbers are worse. (Although they do have a lackluster track record) I loved We Will Be Heroes, but I wish they would've used the Movie 10 version for Battle Dimension. Bring back songs like that, DuArt, they're awesome. Well, I might also want to include The Ultimate Challenge in there, but we sadly didn't hear enough of it. I digress, though. 4Kids will be ridiculed for all time, but they at least played a part in making pokemon popular. That does not save them from the atrocities they committed with their dub, though.

The openings that 4Kids gave us were way better than those TCPi or the Japanese gave us.

    Pros:

    - Their opening songs were some of the best in my opinion and I prefer the majority of them over TPCi's.
    - The voice actors that they hired were of a good quality and I didn't dislike any of the voices for the characters.

    Cons

    - The editing of the script when it wasn't absolutely necessary (jokes that would have been lost in translation I consider to be necessary, but I don't for shipping hints or other dialogue). This also includes the references to Japanese culture.
    - The paint edits done to remove Japanese writing and any other writing.
    - The inclusion of dub music, especially when entire new scores were composed for some of the movies.
