Even as a kid I always knew there was something up with that person from the Suzie episode.

I'm surprised nobody started to notice the almost pre-Contest stuff being done in this episode. Making a Pokemon fashionable, anyone? Suzie almost gave me the impression of a coordinator, and its more noticeable now looking back at her in retrospect.

Suzie reappears in Johto and Brock actually enters a Pokemon contest...almost a primitive version of what anime contests would be in the next arc. Makes me wonder really if what was done in the anime influenced GameFreak to come up with the game-canon contests later on.

There's always the question of the anime's influence on the games. It's been theorized that Colosseum was based on the Dark Balls from the 4th movie, for instance. And then there's double battles being introduced in the Orange Islands.

Or the berries seen in Generation I!

I didn't even notice any changes in the first paint edit of Scissors Street!
A seconds long shot like that with hardly noticeable writings just isn't worth any paint edits...

Does this episode win "the-most-changed-Kanto-episode-by-4kids" position or are there even others more edited?

    Excellent comparison!

A little interesting bit of trivia about Hypno's Naptime,
I noticed that the elevator the gang use to go up the building to the penthouse is quite reminiscent to the elevator used in the Celadon Dept store in the games. So this could be the anime's way of making up for not showing the Store itself...

"Princess vs. Princess" has a LOT more paint edits. That's probably the reason it was pushed back to the start of Season Two.

Which is even more pathetic since there's even more Japanese culture in that episode than the Erika one.

I donno, even with all the text they could have done it the same way since, if you don't actually KNOW that it's a real festival, it could be taken as something unspecific.

Actually most celebrations could, from most cultures.

Whoever does the Region 4 box sets isn't much better. This is an excerpt from what's written on the Advanced Battle collection.

"Join Ash Ketchum on his quest to become the world’s greatest Pokémon Master as he prepares for The Grand Festival in Season 8."

Oh, and I love your comparisons, Dogasu... I can't wait for the rest of Season 11!

That reminds me a lot of the Season 3 summary they had up on Toonami Jetstream that said something like "Join Ash, Brock, and May as they travel through the Johto region."

On the back of a rental case for a Pokemon episode DVD, I once saw this: "as they battle the evil Rocket Group."

the third book in the Kids Pocket Books Pocket Monsters series - a series of books in Japan that contain all sorts of behind-the-scenes information
Wow, that's really interesting to know there's actually such an official "behind the scenes" books
Is it possible to find scans/translations of it somewhere? would you be able to possibly do some yourself? I'm sure I'm not the only one interested to know what else they reveal there...

And now I wonder how the English official text called that guy... I also wonder if he got a male or female VA in the Hebrew dub but I can't remember such an old ep and as I constantly say there's no way for me to check it...
EDIT: how it was in the English dub? did he got a male or female voice?

He was voiced by a man, I think. (Atleast in the Finnish dub he was. And since the dub was based on the English dub, why not?)

I doubt they always listen to the English, they could just look at the character and think it's a woman XD
Though it also depends what was the character's name in the official English text... I doubt it was the same as the Japanese name (I'm still surprised they actually called him so in an official book... they could simply say "guy" or something)

Great comparison once again, Dogasu! I like when you talk about episodes with a lot of edits, as that makes it more enjoyable.

I'd love to take some scans from the books but unfortunately, I don't have access to a scanner here in Japan.

When I go home to the U.S. for the summer, though, I'll try to find the time to use the scanner I have *there* to get some images.

It was an effeminate male voice.
