Man, it's a cruel irony that you chose yesterday, of all days, to confirm that Butterfree is still alive.

You mean, besides the part where he totally did harness Primeape's power to win the competition? Getting Primeape to listen to him was the achievement, which makes it odd that he wouldn't then make use of it.

    That was PUSA, not 4Kids.

I must be remembering the episode incorrectly then - I haven't seen it in eight years, after all. My mistake...

I'm really interested hearing about all these weird dub things going on in other countries.

In-character for Meowth, maybe. Nyasu? Not so much.

No, I didn't watch the episode. I did that whole thing from memory.

    -_-

I just rewatched the flashback and confirmed what you said, though. So, I'll go in and change it with my next update (which should be up later tonight, Japan time).

Regardless of whether it's said one time or multiple times, it's still an awkward thing to hear during a character's farewell montage.

Yeah...I had actually read about that before I uploaded the update, but by that point it was still in that sketchy "I heard it from a secret source" phase. Now that it's actually been publicly confirmed and all that, I'll address it with the update I make tonight.

Considering that no matter what language he's speaking, he's still a delusional little kitty cat who has all these grand fantasies about his leader?

The basics of Nyasu and Meowth's personality are the same, but there are several differences which account mostly to the stuff he says in either version. Team Rocket are the most heavily rewritten characters in the series because they're so fond of puns and wordplay in either version. They come off differently in the dub because of that.

Yeah...it's not so much a "one version portrays him with this personality while the other version does not" thing as much as it's a "one version portrays him with this personality to a certain degree while the other version doesn't emphasize it quite as much." The differences are subtle but they still exist.

New update, by the way. Sorry about the huge block of text.

Great update. I liked your bit about Maddie. I too prefer the Japanese version, but she was Meowth to me growing. Hearing all the nice things people are saying about her, my only regret was that I never met her. I said it in the other two threads for Maddie, but I'll say it again: I hope her family and friends will be okay for the holidays. I wish them the best in their time of pain.
The only good human is a dead human!

    Oops! Wrong franchise.

A thousand Meowth are looking up at the night sky with tears in their eyes. None of them will be looking for loose change tonight.

A thousand condolences to all Maddie Blaustein fans. She will be missed forever more. Maddie Blaustein 1960-2008

The Boss Fantasies are not a dub invention. Watch them with the sound off and the implications are the same.

It's not like the boss fantasies are the only places where Meowth talks. And again, there are plenty of things that get lost in translation or added to the dub script. Language is subtle.

I'm saying that those are enough to convey the idea that Meowth is a delusional little bastard. And I know the full-on ones didn't exist until late Johto, but even early on he was dreaming about sitting on the Boss's lap with Persian in a cage or whatever.

But simply saying that Meowth is a "delusional little bastard" is oversimplifying things. You can't just give the character a one sentence description like that.

By the way...I've gotten like *no* feedback about the most recent comparison :/

I like the latest comparison! In fact, I'm liking a lot of the recent Kanto revisions - they're the episodes with the most Japanese cultural references, so I'm learning a lot through them. I never knew about the use of surgical masks to prevent the spread of germs before reading this one, for instance, and the one for episode 20 taught me everything I wanted to know about the Bon festival.

You know I've elaborated on it elsewhere. I wasn't aware that I had to recap everything I've already said.

Heck, I've gone into a psychological profile about why Meowth started his daydreams.

I actually *didn't* know that. I can't be expected to follow every single post you make, nor can I be expected to remember every single post of yours that I actually *do* read.

And regardless...in *this* thread, you were basically like "my one sentence description of Meowth applies to Nyasu as well so there's no problem." Even if I agreed with that, the point made in the "Bye Bye Butterfree" comparison - that there's a difference between what Nyasu said and what Meowth said - isn't going to be changed because of that.

You said, in times when I've brought it up before, that I "think too hard" about it.

And differences don't have to be bad though, which is what you put across that this *was*. I thought it was a nice bit of continuity for the character (if not for overall facts outside his mind).
