Eh, it's a box set released to commemorate an anniversary. It's not something that could have just snuck up on them.

So I've watched the first three movies so far, and the video quality of the movies almost make up for the lack of extras. I'm not an expert with a keen eye for things like this, but from what I can tell, these are true HD remasters taken from the original film masters. Other than a few random shots here and there where there was a bit of film dust, the movies look as good as if the animators had come into your house and taped the original animation cels to your TV. The colors are nice and subdued (they didn't go crazy adjusting the brightness and contrast in an attempt to make the movies seem "modern") and every tiny detail in the background could be seen without any trouble whatsoever. Like in the first movie - there's a board in the background in the establishing shot of the inside of the pier that says "CANCELED" that I never noticed before because of how muddy it was beforehand. All of the icons on Orchid-Hakase's computer when he's talking to Uchikido-Hakase in the second movie are clear as day as well.

Unfortunately, one side effect I've noticed of the movies looking so great is that scenes where the animators kind of cheated and didn't do as many inbetween cels as they should have is much more noticeable now that they're in high def. It's not a huge deal and the only way the Blu-ray authors could have fixed it was to reanimate those scenes from scratch, so I can't be too bothered by it.

Still, for the price they're charging (nearly half a grand, people!), there really, really should be more extras on this thing.

@Dogasu; Is the first movie the original one from theaters, or the CGI cloud fest version?

It's the CGI one, known in Japan as the "kanzenban." They haven't released the original theatrical version since the VHS days.

So I just watched the first two Pikachu shorts. Rougela's been recolored purple in the illustrations that are shown during the ending themes of both shorts.

I don't know if the 2011 DVD re-release of those shorts had this edit or not, but I can confirm that the DVD boxset didn't.

The more info that comes out, the more I'm glad I didn't spend money on them.

    Very disappointing release.

They seem to have cropped image bit more than previous releases to make aspect ratio same as in newest movies. (a bit more wide than 16:9, which means more black on top and bottom on 16:9 displays)
Also text overlays are very bad quality expect in movie 1 ending.

No extras or Japanese subtitles (even when DVD's have one) :(

Verdict: Don't buy. It's ridiculously priced and hurried release.

That seems a bit dramatic. The cropping is barely noticeable - it's the sort of thing you'd only notice if you were doing a side-by-side comparison.

The vastly improved video quality more than makes up for the couple of millimeters that are missing from the top and bottom of the screen.
