Chapter 1 'Bad Traffic'
Malcolm looked down at the Radio set and sighed. His Pokemon adventure hadn’t worked out how he had planned. What had originally started as a joyous trip to with his friends had somehow transformed into a boring, mundane job so that he could pay off his expenses. His job, or what he called Hell, was a Traffic policeman on the Celadon-Fuchsia cycling road where all he did all day was answer questions from noisy tourists travelling to the Safari Zone. The sad part was that even though the Safari Zone attracted the noisy tourists it had been a big part of his childhood, with the whole family going there once a year, and it was now being replaced by some new venue.
Malcolm stared at the clock. Only five more minutes till road duty, which was at least more fun than manning the Traffic Tower, a fun name for a less than extraordinary experience. Really all it entailed was making sure that traffic was smooth exiting the bridge by use of designated traffic lights. For road duty you could at least get on a motorbike and piss around when there was little traffic, something which even Malcolm’s superiors did to pass the time but which they tried to keep secret. Malcolm looked down at one of his Pokeballs and with a small grin pressed the central button releasing the Pokemon in a red flash. A goopey purple Pokemon materialised, and yawning and looking around moved towards Malcolm. The Grimer crawled up on the desk and sat next to Malcolm, licking his face and crawling onto his head mimicking a hat.
Malcolm smiled, Fraser was his oldest friend and had been with him all the way through his journey, getting him as a birthday present and as a starter Pokemon due to the lack of nearby Pokemon labs. Malcolm remembered memories from his childhood; helping his grandpa on his farm near Mahogany Town and cooking with his mum and grandma. Malcolm didn’t leave on his Pokemon journey until he was fifteen and then it was really only to visit his older sister in Cerulean city and his other sister on Knot Island, with some of his friends tagging along and stopping off at various cities. It was originally him and his four friends Atticus, Will, Charlie and Daniel but all their plans became complicated when Daniel broke his leg crossing Tohjo falls and had to be rushed to hospital.
The rest continued on, trying to make it in time for the annual Kanto Pokemon Showdown; a competition in which the top 5 Kanto gym leaders attempt to beat the Elite 4 and Champion. The prize? The replacement of that specific Elite 4 or Champion. This year Sabrina was battling Lorelei, the new head of the Viridian gym Blue battling the current champion Lance, Fuchsia’s gym leader Koga was battling Agatha and Erika battling Bruno. Blain, the 7th gym leader had forfeited his post in the competition due to the recent eruption on Cinnabar Island instead letting Lt.Surge of Vermillion City take his place and battle the relatively new Elite 4 member Karin. When the four of them got to the stadium it was already packed out with no seats available so they instead hurried to a local bar to watch the game via T.V.
The results soon came out, the easily superior Karin quickly taking down Lt.Surge with just her Houndoom and the icy cold confident Lorelei dispatching off Sabrina in her final year as an Elite 4 member before her semi-retirement and holiday to Hoenn. The outcome of Bruno and Erika’s match was quickly decided with Bruno beating Erika in a 3-6 win and the Champion proved how good he was knocking out Blue in a well deserved 4-6 win. Soon there was only one match left and it would be a nail biter, Koga’s Crobat beating Agatha’s Gengar in a 5-6 win sending pandemonium through the crowd and indeed the whole of Kanto.
From there Malcolm and his friends split up with Charlie meeting family in Vermillion and Will and Atticus touring Kanto, leaving only Malcolm by himself. Eventually Malcolm met his sister in Cerulean City and headed for the new port in Pallet Town which would take him to Knot Island, but whilst travelling to the ferry in Fuchsia City it became apparent that he needed more money, and took up a job as a Traffic Warden on the bridge.
“Malcolm... MALCOLM” Yelled Malcolm’s boss Emmet. “Get up its time for road duty, plus it looks like you need some air kid, open some windows when you get back.”
Although not the nicest boss Emmet was a good guy and was pretty favourable over the previous bridge manager, Jeffrey a six-foot-four giant who was fired by Fuchsia cities department of Traffic and Transport for Tax fraud.
Malcolm got up and walked down to the garage not noticing that Fraser was still on his head. He noticed the motorbike that Emmet had left for him had a note on it, which read ‘Clean after use’. Malcolm slapped himself in the face, annoyed at the extra work he would soon have to do, yet did not rip the note in half but stuck it to the door frame as a reminder when he came back as hopefully the good work would earn him a raise so that he could buy the Ferry ticket to Pallet Town and Boat ticket to Knot Island. Now noticing Fraser he recalled him to his Pokeball and put the ball in a pocket in his leather jacket with the rest of his Pokeballs. He then slipped on his helmet and left the garage on the bike, heading down in the motorbike lane towards Celadon city.
It soon became apparent though when cyclists and motorbikes came whizzing past that something was wrong, with the opposing traffic quickly increasing. Malcolm drove over to a passing cyclist, asking what all the commotion was.
“Haven’t you seen it?!” He said taking deep breathes on his small brake from cycling “Oh god, the bridge near Celadon is wrecked, completely gone. Don’t attempt to stop, it just run... Wait is that it? Oh shit! Run man, RUN!” And with that he was gone, absorbed by the mass of passing traffic.
“What’s coming?! Tell me!” He yelled in desperation but pretty soon his question was answered and he could hear the footsteps and the loud roar of the Pokemon getting closer and closer.
Over the haze of the car and motorbike fumes the large bipedal Pokemon could be seen, crushing abandoned cars and spewing Hyper Beams towards the traffic. Malcolm looked up in horror at the Tyranitar and shuddered, knowing what damage one of the beasts could do when an enraged one attacked Mahogany town, killing 16 people and destroying a whole block of houses. Malcolm thought of his options; Try to stop it and most likely die or run and lose job, a no-brainer really. It was while he was thinking on this that a Hyper Beam was let loose from the Tyranitar’s mouth and ploughed right into the car on the left of him, he didn’t even get time to scream before he was knocked out and sent flying over the rails of the bridge towards the water underneath, with his descent ending in a loud SPLOOSH.
