Chapter 9 up!
Episode #9: A Tough Match at The Oreburgh Gym!
Rain and Roark were both ready to face off in this mighty Gym Battle, while Jessica sits within the stands surrounding this rocky field. Craig talks with the receptionist from before, but they just walk off, as if they finished their discussion. He steps onto the judges box with his red and green flags, representing the leader and the opponent respectively, and prepares to get this battle underway.
"All right," Craig began, "the match between Rain Eidoh of Twinleaf Town and the Gym Leader, Roark, will now begin! Both trainers will use three Pokemon each, and the trainer to knock out their opponent's Pokemon first will be declared the winner! The challenger may substitute at any time, however, the Gym Leader is not allowed to switch! Are both trainer's ready?!"
"Yes, sir!" Rain said.
"I'm ready!" Roark said.
Jessica wonders if Rain's first Gym Battle will go well, but since this was his first time, she doesn't think it'll go well. Suddenly, Manny decides to come back as he sits next to Jessica to watch Rain's battle.
"Oh," Jessica said. "Y-You're back."
"Yeah," Manny replied. "I did some research on this Ketsui kid. Apparently, he's a member of the Sinnoh Region Mafia."
Jessica was shocked to find this out.
"I'm not sure how Rain will react when we tell him the news," Manny said. "I mean, to find out your rival is the member of the Mafia?"
"READY?!" Craig shouted. He raises both flags to start the match. "BEGIN!!!"
"Go, Piplup!" Rain said, throwing Jessica's Pokeball out onto the field.
Piplup comes out happily while Roark just smiles as he takes his Pokeball off of his belt.
He sends out a gray rock with a eyes, a mouth and two arms, pounding the ground in preparation for the battle. Rain wonders how he'll fair in a Rock Type gym, but he has some advatages with two super effective types and one immune type against the foe. He trusts Piplup's abilities and hopes that she'll carry out Rain's victory enough so that Shinx won't be used for this match.
"Go, Bubblebeam!" Rain ordered.
Piplup launches a barrage of glowing bubbles at the opponent, but Roark smiles, as he has other plans in mind.
Geodude gets into a defensive position and begins to roll towards Piplup at great speeds, smashing into it and knocking it out of the way. Piplup tries to get up, but it's soon knocked over again by Geodude's Rollout. Rain tries to think of a strategy to counter it's attack.
"Use Bubblebeam again," Rain ordered.
Piplup fires a bubblebeam, which hits Geodude, but does nothing to it and ends up slamming into the penguin Pokemon with the continuous Rollout. Geodude stops as he takes a break from the Rollout to recover its strength a bit.
"Stealth Rock!" Roark ordered.
Geodude slams the ground to summon boulders about its size as it circles above the battlefield. Rain tells Piplup to brace itself, but when they scatter, they all miss their target, leaving Rain to wonder what he was trying to do.
"How about we show them what we're made of," Roark said. "Rollout, once more!"
"Dodge it!" Rain shouted.
Piplup waits for the Rollout to come closer and moves out of the way before it manages to hit her.
"There's no way I can break through that Rollout," Rain thought. "I just have to be on the evasive until I think of a plan."
Piplup continues to dodge the rollouts, until one of the attacks manages to hit her as she falls over onto the ground, struggling to hang on.
"End this with Rock Throw!" Roark commanded.
Geodude flips, while picking up a small rock that was a bit smaller than itself and chucks it towards Piplup as it strikes her hard, breaking the rock, sending her flying back, and knocking her out.
"Piplup is unable to battle!" Craig shouted. He raises the red flag to Roark's side "Geodude is the winner!"
"You'll have to do better than that!" Roark said.
“We didn’t even get a hit on it!” Rain thought. “This isn’t good.”
Rain can picture Ket with a nasty smile on his face, as if he was mocking Rain for his poor battling skills.
"I cannot lose to this guy!" Rain thought in anger. "Not while he's ahead of me!"
Manny can see his anger towards Ket, wondering if this'll hinder his battling skills. Rain takes his Pokeball and recalls Piplup, leaving him to take his second Pokeball as he sends out Turtwig to take the field in place of Piplup.
"BEGIN!!!" Craig shouted, raising both flags again.
"Razor Leaf!" Rain ordered.
Turtwig prepares to fire, but all of a sudden, the rocks that Geodude sent out before slam into turtwig all at once, resulting in a large cloud of smoke. Rain stares in shock at the sudden assault while the smoke clears, showing Turtwig, who's already weakened by the rocks alone!
"Confused?" Roark asked. "That's Stealth Rock, it's a nasty trick that attacks any of my opponent's Pokemon entering the battle. And it stays on the field until it's destroyed by my opponent. But I'm not sure you'll have the time to destory all of those rocks.
Rain growls in anger as Turtwig fires the razor leaves, leaving Geodude to defend from them.
"Defense Curl into Rollout!" Roark ordered.
Geodude begins to glow as it curls into a ball once more. Then it begins to roll towards Turtwig, as the razor leaves continue to strike at it, but that doesn't hold up when Turtwig gets hit by the rolling rock, knocking it aside. Turtwig slowly gets up, but Geodude turns once more and strikes him again. Rain tries to think of a strategy to defeat him. Rain suddenly thinks about the momentum he's gaining and gets an idea from that.
"Turtwig, aim in front of Geodude and use Razor Leaf!"
Turtwig fires the leaves while Geodude moves around to dodge, but the attack manages to set it off course and eventually falls over. Turtwig rushes over to the helpless Geodude and smiles.
"Absorb," Rain said.
Turtwig uses the twig on his head to absorb energy from Geodude, but due to type weaknesses, Geodude was taking a lot of damage.
"Stop him!" Roark shouted.
Geodude grabs Turtwig and flips him over, distrupting the attack. Turtwig flails about on the back of his shell and eventually flips over, only to find Geodude with a Rock over his head.
"Uh-oh!" Rain thought. "Razor Leaf!"
Turtwig fires a Razor Leaf at the same time as Geodude's Rock Throw, hitting both attackers and sending them back, Turtwig going a little farther. Turtwig tries to get up, but eventually falls.
"Turtwig is unable to battle!" Craig said, raising his flag to Roark's side. "Geodude is the winner!"
Rain growls in anger as he calls Turtwig back into his Pokeball. He was left with one Pokemon, who could never defeat any of his Pokemon with the attacks he knows now: his Shinx.
"I think he's sunk," Manny said. "All he has left is Shinx, but what can he do?"
Rain takes out his remaining Pokeball and sends out his Shinx, who gives out a happy growl.
"I hope...I hope he doesn't lose after all of this," Jessica said.
"Considering that Roark isn't even done with Geodude," Manny began, "I doubt that."
The rocks from before strike Shinx, just like it did with Turtwig, leaving it barely standing after that assault. Rain had no clue what to do.
"BEGIN!!!" Craig shouted, raising both flags once more.
"Rollout, once more!" Roark ordered.
"Dodge it!" Rain shouted.
Geodude goes in with a Rollout once more, while Shinx's speed makes it dodge the attacks with ease. Shinx falters a bit, but ends up getting hit from the Rollout, knocking him aside the same way as Rain's other Pokemon. Rain doesn't know what to do at this point.
"S-S-Spark!" Rain said nervously
Shinx fires a blue bolt at Geodude, but it's having no effect on him at all, leaving it to run into him and send him flying against a wall, knocking him out instantly.
"SHINX!!!" Rain shouted with worry.
"Shinx is unable to battle!" Craig shouted. His red flag, once again, points to Roark's side. "Geodude wins! The victory goes to Roark!"
Roark straightens his miner hat and recalls Geodude to its Pokeball.
"Better luck next time," he said with a smile.
Roark and his referee head to the back room, while Rain stares in shock at the humiliating defeat that was handed to him. He falls to his knees and begins to cry while Manny and Jessica rush over to him.
"Hey, are you all right?!" Manny asked.
"Why?!" Rain asked in anger. "Why can't I be as good as him?! What does he have that I don't?! He beat Roark with just a Chimchar, and I did nothing to that Geodude! WHY?! What am I doing wrong?"
"Rain..." Jessica said, as if she was about to cry as well.
"Rain, you need to wake up!" Manny said, annoyed. The two look up at him, wondering why he suddenly changed attitudes like that. "Listen to yourself, you sound like a spoiled brat! You need to stop worrying about Ketsui and focus on yourself. I've been taught that when in a battle, the only thing that should matter...is yourself. Focus on your battle and don't let anything distract you. If Ketsui's nothing to you, why are you so determined to beat him?! Now, unless you're going to whine all day, get up and let us help you."
Rain wipes his tears, while Shinx comes running towards him all bruised up, looking at him with worry in his eyes.
"I'll make you stronger," Rain said. "I promise."
Shinx jumps in his arms as Rain hugs him with the promise in mind. While all of this was happening, Roark was watching the moment through the blinds behind a glass wall as he feels sorry for them. He shuts the blinds as he walks towards his office with Craig following him.
"Hey," Craig began, "you don't have to worry about this kid. He's fine training on his own."
"Yeah, but I'm worried," Roark said. "That Ketsui must have some bad blood against this Rain kid. And to top it all off, he lost to me without making a dent on my Geodude. I wish there was something I can do."
"Like I said, you shouldn't meddle in their affairs. He'll be fine. In fact, I remember a certain someone who acted like this with your father."
Roark's father was another Gym Leader, just like him. A long time ago, he humiliatingly lost to his father and made a fool out of himself in front of his employees. He never liked that at all. He eventually beat him, but he thought Rain wasn't like him.
"Yeah, but I was just being cocky." Roark said.
"Well, you do what you want. Just remember, he IS your opponent."
Roark looks back at the gym arena and thinks hard about what he's trying to do. Does he really want to help an opponent in order to get a gym badge? Is he really that nice?
Turtwig and Shinx were happily running around while Rain tries to think of attacks that these two can learn for their rematch with Roark. Manny was looking through a book while this all happened, hoping to find the right attacks for the two of them.
"How about Iron Tail for Shinx?" Manny asked.
"Iron Tail?" Rain asked.
"It's a Steel type attack, which means that it'll do wonders against Roark's Pokemon! We just need someone to teach him that attack."
Manny's Probopass, the only Pokemon he has, doesn't know Iron Tail, since he doesn't have one and Jessica was just starting out. Suddenly, Roark gives them a whistling sound from the distance as he runs towards them. The two wonder what he could want from them.
"Hey," Roark said. "Need some help?"
"I guess," Manny said. "We want to teach Shinx Iron Tail."
"Great choice," he replied. "Because I'm the right person to teach you!"
They were very surprised to hear him say that he'll teach Shinx Iron Tail, especially since he was their opponent for Rain's rematch. Things were about to get a bit strange from here, especially the circumstances that would soon follow.
