When I first played Silver, my first Pokemon game, I did loads of silly things! I couldn't get out of my house, got completely lost on Route 32 and kept ending up back where I started, couldn't understand why one of my Pokemon had "no will to battle" and then I released my Quilava! I had to start a new game...

I have a few of these moments. I doubt they're totally unique, though.

    1. Took me a few mins when starting in Generation I to even get out of the house. My little brain was so confused.

    2. Got it into my head that because the starters all evolved into their second forms at level 16, that my Pidgey should also evolve at the same level. And when it didn't, I used to get really confused/annoyed and a few times even restarted when it didn't. Eventually, I looked it up and saw how wrong I was.

    3. Was stuck in Mount Moon for days... Eventually my friend in school helped.

    4. Got stuck in Rock Tunnel because I either couldn't find or, in later replays, couldn't be bothered to go get, Flash. This resulted in my memorising Rock Tunnel and being able to get through it without flash without any trouble. I could probably still get through it now.

    5. The amount of time I spent the Safari Zone looking for the Secret House was ridiculous.... weeks, possibly months?

Back in Red/Blue, I always thought that Splash had a chance of doing some super water move like a Hydro Pump. But I was like 8 when I thought that. After a few years, I realized that was a dumb thought.

Chalk that one up to poor localization. The move wasn't called splash in the japanese version, it was called hop. This is why Spoink knows splash and why it makes sense for the winner's path Magikarp to learn bounce.

i just remembered this about a second ago, i was playing firered, beat everything and was trying to complete the ruby/sapphire mini-quest. i got stuck in front of the Rockets Secret Base/hideout on (4?) island or something and couldnt figure out how to open the door :/
so eventually i quit trying to figure out what those dots meant and picked up a new game. i then, about 2-3yrs later picked the game back up. saw i was still stuck and by this time i knew the internet had playthroughs, so i looked it up online and imagine my surprise when i found out that in order for you to get in....

...all you had to do was cut the door down :S and that the "strange dots" were braille. i mean seriously, if you can see, why would you need to know braille? :/

and that flash isn't an Electric type attack :S

I also couldn't leave my house in Blue because I couldn't find the door.

But what I did next was very stupid. I had the guide before I bought the game, and I read it religiously, memorising everything I needed to know in the game. Including the advice to pick Bulbasaur because he could beat Brock and Misty. So I vowed never to pick Charmander.

Somehow I got it into my head that when you picked your starter, it was randomised. Seeing three poke balls on the table didn't clue me in that they were assigned to each ball. So I went to the first ball, which of course was Charmander. For some reason, I just kept picking that same ball, wondering why I was only getting Charmander. I gave up and made it to Viridian Forest with him before I checked the game guide again, saw that there was three Poke balls on the table and finally worked it out.

I always thought you could get a shiny Pokemon by handing your Pokemon a nugget back in Emerald...

That False Swipe left only one HP. Seriously. I was like 8, had just painstakingly raised myself a Sycther in Gold from the Bug Catching contest to level 25 (overkill, I know), and went in to fight Whitney. I was so confused as to why False Swipe did nearly so much damage the first two turns (bringing it down to 1 HP) and nothing on the third turn. If only I had read the move description...

Cool Re: A "Wow, I should have figured that out a lot sooner" thread

I started playing Yellow at eight or so. (This is important.)

It took nine years for me to figure out that Rock types were not immune to electricity, and that Onix was not a pure Rock type.

Sharpest spoon in the drawer I am not. Also I totally thought that Ghost types were weak to Psychic, but we can chalk that one up to Gen I having no pure Ghost types--I figured out my mistake quickly enough in Silver.
