I have always wondered, why some boys use Dawn, and why some girls use Lucas, but the later is more popular than the former, why soeone would do that ? is kinda weird.

Really? I'm usually wondering why people post threads about video games in sections about Pokémon in general.
Some use the guy so they came name him Ash. Some use the girl because of her looks.
Personally, in video games I play, I keep my characters as close to me as possible, so I choose the male trainer.
...
Well my cousin told me he was gonna choose the girl when he got Pokemon DP because he thought the guy looked like a sissy.... iirc
I'm also going to start out my Firered game with a boy, this is because I think he's really cute.
So it's either preference, or just wanting a change/to be different.

Lucas is pathetic. A beret and Scarf? French bastard.
I chose him because, well....I'm a guy. The only time I used the female character was in Crystal.
What's wrong with being French?
And moreover, does it count as a French stereotype if the character is Japanese?
The beret-argument was getting on my nerves ever since the male character was revealed. I guess a Red´s and Gold´s baseball-cap wasn´t an US-stereotype, but made the characters "cool" and "kickass", while the beret is somewhat "gay" because...French people only like art and baguettes and boring movies? And,..of COURSE only French people wear berets.
My head hurts now.
As to the topic...I´ve chosen the female character from sapphire although I am male. Just because I liked the look of her and wanted to play as a female for once.
Should I feel strange when I´m playing Princess Peach on Mario Brothers 2 instead of Mario?

From my observations, it seems that people only choose the opposite character because they look sexy or they want to "daydream" if you catch my drift.
I normally go with the female and I am a male. I see nothing wrong with this. The only game I go male is FR/LG 'cus he looks like Ash. Another reason why I do it is because the last two games have had the characters from the show so I go with them, and I don't really like the look of the males from either gen 3 or 4.
In RBGY male is the only option so I chose male.
In GSC I chose a girl because it was a new option and I like variation in games.
In Ruby I chose the guy because I didn't like the girl's look. In Emerald I chose the girl first because I was a guy in Ruby. I've played as both genders in Emerald the last few times I've played.
In Pearl I chose the girl because I liked her in the anime.
I am a girl but I don't care what I play as. Most of the time it's random.
I chose a girl in Leaf Green, because it was during my "Hollie" stage. I named her that too.
My parents totally freaked out that I was a girl in a video game (:P) so I've been the boy in all the games (Diamond, Pearl, Emerald) post that.
