Thread: Why is Silver so popular among the fandom?

Like everyone else is saying, I think it's because he's the only rival who could really be considered a villain, plus the fact that he changes at the end, and you could even find him to battle again on certain days (this is GSC I'm talking about, since I don't really know much about HGSS).

I personally don't like him, though. He just doesn't interest me.

It's the same thing as the Contest and Pokethlon outfit change, it's pretty much strip and redress, but on screen so they can't you know, show anything. :P It can be implied he undressed the character, especially concidering the fact some of those clothes wouldn't layer like that (Hat and shoes especially). And Raine is right, Goldenrod scene fanart is still wrong, even when I have the R-18 filter ON. Some of it I wish I could un-see...

Personally I don't care for Silver. I like a Barry as a rivel more so. I'd rather have a rival who, while still pushing you to be better than them, isn't an ass.

At least Silver gets a Crobat in the end (as well as having his Starter out of the pokeball in HGSS), so at least he cares for his Pokémon. As another bit, in the Clair/Lance double battle in HGSS, it was originally to be Lance and You VS Clair and Silver. He pushes Clair and says "No I want to be with you!" So he's not so mean in the end. (Of course that line probably spawned half the Kotone x Rival stuff, but whatever) ... granted his teams sucks as Lance's Gyarados owned everything on his and my team but that's besiiiides the point *mumblewishIhadbeenwithlancegrumble*

While Silver is a great rival, it annoys me when people think that all rivals have to be mean jerkasses to be good.

For example, Pearl/Barry is hated as a rival because he's a hyperactive kid who runs around everywhere instead of being a jerk.

But did you notice? That's rival material too. He may not be mean and nasty like Silver, but his behavior is enough to motivate you to crush him. Besides I would personally find it more embarassing to lose to a hyperactive kid that flails around than someone like Silver.

As said before, we got Wally, a sickly kid that sets out to prove himself- even if it means being rivals with your character. And Brendan/May seem more like their competing with your character to complete the Pokedex research. Green/Blue is the typical childhood friend bully.

There are many different kinds of rivals out there. Besides it would be boring if every rival was a Silver clone with a different sprite.

I didn't even notice there was that much "hate" for Barry.... he's another one I like. I think he's flippin' hilarious and entertaining, in the games and the anime...to me anyway.

I think rival is a pretty cool guy. eh steals pokemanz and doesn't afraid of anything...

Multiple reasons.

1. Design. He looks awesome.
2. Personality. Green was a true rival, but Mayden/Wally and Pearl... they jsut didn't feel rivaly. Especially Wally. Annoying kid.
3. Backstory. He's Giovanni's son. What is not to love?

Okay, Silver is a bad cookie, but you and others say the others are just childish, hyper and cocky, but you don't go into the same depth as you do Silver.

Green-Was the loveble cocky overconfident rival we all know of. He was grandson of Prof.Oak, and was shown to have other family members(Daisy). Also over time his character grows, which is shown as him becoming a bit more mature.

Brendan/May-Were the first helper characters and both had friendly battles, and supported the character by giving them items, etc. Plus their father was the region's professor.

Wally-Was different from your ordinary rival characters, he was a boy suffereing from some kind of illness, and strived to keep going and become a great pokemon trainer, plus he wanted to have a strong bond with his pokemon, his Gardevoir was a sort of physical representation of this.

Pearl/Barry(Whatever suits you)-Was sort of like Green but with an upbeat personality and filled up 100% sugar. He also, as the story progressed became a bit more serious about his pokemon, this is shown especially during the battle between him and Jupiter, then when you battle with him to defeat Mars and Jupiter. Also he has a backstory of that his father was friends with your character's father and how they started their journey similar. Plus his father had a significant role as a frontier brain.

Lucas/Dawn- They had a similar role to Brendan/May but didn't battle you, but checked up on you, gave you items and at times battled with you(I think once). Also like Brendan/May they were shown to work for the region's proffessor and shown to live somewhere.

I would do Kotone, but I haven't played HG/SS but from the sounds of it she sounds like a support character. So I think that Silver isn't the only fleshed out rival character. maybe more so than others, but not the only one.

He's bad-ass and has red hair.

Because he ACTS like a rival.

He'll mess you up. He's a bully and he'll do whatever he can to get what he wants.

I can't wait to play SS/HG to see what they've done with him.

(Although, I do prefer Wally and Barry to him.)

The thing is that Mayden and Wally aren't really rivals. Mayden gives up and Wally come out of nowhere. As for Pearl, he's a rival by definition, but frankly, I just don't like him that much. As for Green, that guy is awesome, but Silver is the darkest, most jerkass rival and its his backstory that makes him so freaking awesome. The guy looks cool, lives cool, has cool pokemon, and its so awesome to battle him. He's not like Green in that Green really was an intentional Rival. Green really was competing against you. Silver just kept crossing your path.

You guys are forgetting that he also has the coolest rival theme.

Really? That's the reason why I hated him, he acted like a little kid and looked fucking retarded stupid most of the time, and was damn ass annoying...

I don't get where you guys get the idea that rivals have to be mean and stuff. :/ A rival is a person who is competition, no matter how they act. Rival =/= Mean person. Just a person who would push you and give you competition, someone to be better than.
