It's a very ugly awesome face. :P

I found tons of ugly ones from Pokemon Green, but this is the most ugly imo.

I actually quite like the Green Butterfree, and I'm not sure why everyone dislikes it. What do people hate so much? The feet and antennae look a tad off, but not so much to me for the big reaction.

Wow, it's been over four years since I made this thread, and look all the discussion it's caused! Never thought there'd be so much to talk about regarding the old sprites!

BTW, I'm re-playing Yellow, and I forgot how limited the early games were at times after the third, fourth and fifth generations arrived. But it's still got that 8-bit charm!

I think that Charizard is one of the cooler ones in red, but Blastiose, just ugh.

I think this is actually the best Butterfree sprite ever. It seems to have much more detail than the others. The wings look more realistic than in other versions. I like how some patterns in the wings have a lighter colour than the rest of the darker pattern. The small wings have very fine detail, not even seen in the newest version of this sprite (and this disappeared as early as in Blue version, I guess the spriters went lazy or they did not have enough time to put so much work on a single sprite).

The Butterfree in the Japanese Red/Green doesn't look too bad, but the wings ARE a tad weird-looking, compared to the others.


Maybe it's because I played Yellow mostly as my 1st generation game of choice? I am guessing that Green Butterfree sprite may be an early concept art or something; the Yellow sprite seems clearly based off Ken Sugimori's old Butterfree artwork:


Also, am I the only one who noticed the Gold/Crystal sprites for Caterpie, Metapod and Butterfree are just the American Red/Blue sprites but touched up a bit and with colors added?
