Well Im trying to train up my gyarados to be better in Sp.Atk. Im playing FireRed. How exactly do the EVs work? I thought the yield from a pokemon you beat meant a stat point but apparently not... So how many EV points equals one stat point?

I hate to just post a link, but this page explains it really well. (its how I learned about evs)

Thank you so much! I know its just a link but Ive been trawling through them all day and this ones really good. I had the problem whereby I should have got way more stat points on level up but apparently it doesnt always work right away. Thank you xD Sorry Im blahing on :)
You should probably reconsider training it in Special Attack, since Gyarados has a very low base Special Attack of 60 and Special-based attacks are pretty much unusable.
Yeah, I'd go for physical Attack, and Speed perhaps. Teaching it moves like Earthquake, Ice Fang and Waterfall is good too.

Uh, this is Fire Red - Ice Fang didn't exist and Waterfall is Special. Try this:
Gyarados @ Leftovers (In-game)
Mild Nature
Trait: Intimidate
252 Att. / 158 Att. / 100 Spd.
~ Dragon Dance
~ Aerial Ace
~ Earthquake
~ Hydro Pump
It won't stand up to Skarmory and the like. For that, try HP Rock if you want to go the Pure Attack way.
