Snorlax, or Beldum at Steven's house, or even starters) can also be shinies. So, if you want one of them, you can save before run in a fight with it, and reset, and reset, and reset until it comes as a shiny.
In cases of pokémons you recieve without battle with them (such Pokémon Mansion's Eevee or Beldum), you have to battle or look their stats to determine if it is or not a shiny. This is specially important if you want a shiny starter, because when you are asked to choose one, the game always shows you an image of the pokémon in its regular colors.
For shinies that hatch form eggs, their stats comes from the moment you receive them, thus you can't wait a few steps before it hatches to save and reset, because you will ever receive the same pokémon.
Obviously, as any other shiny, if a matter of luck trying to use any of these methods to get one. Posibilities still be of 1/8000+, so reset work can take, hours, days or weeks. However, you can be 100% sure you'll have the shiny you seek for, instead of grass patches, where, depending of appearence rate, you can run with desired shiny or not (finding a shiny Poochyena when you want a shiny Zigzagoon, for example).
So if you think it, it's a bit more logic to have a shiny Registeel or Mewtwo than a shiny Ralts or Chansey. Matter of chances...
You can find this and more info (thanks to Kakkadragon) about stationary and regular shinies in http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=6wdiys43izo
In other hand, I have a blue Gulpin and a green Minun while I was looking to find Latios in Route 110. Also I got a red Duskull (great color!) in Mt.Pyre while seeking for a Chimecho (that never appeared). In FireRed, I saw a pink Nidorina in Safari Zone, but it ran away...
I'll put my efforts to catch a black Rayquaza (the only legendary that has a good shiny version)...
I have a shiny Machamp (green), a shiny zubat (green), a shiny wurple (purple) and a shiny Caterpie (Gold). I got Machamp off chaining a machoke and trading it, a shiny zubat out of a wild encounter, a shiny wurple off the GTS and I just recently found a gold caterpie off a wild encounter in eterna forest on my leafgreen. My bro has twice as much shinies though, lol.
Tangela (Treasure Beach) LG
Roselia, now Roserade (Breeding) Emerald now Pearl
Palkia (35 soft resets)
Spiritomb (60+ soft resets; I kinda lost count)
Combee (was soft resetting for a female and got a shiny male!)
Skitty (number 45 of a 54 chain long Skitty chain)
Elekid now Electivire (number 2 of a 6 chain long Elekid chain)
I've gotten quite a few off GTS, but I have no way to know if they're legit or not.

~Dustox (Traded. Yup, just like the one in the anime! It's even male! =D)
Of course, since it's GTS, I can't be 100% sure the Luxray and Raichu are legit, but they have real locations/stats/Pokeballs/ect, so I'd like to think they are.

Machamp (Caught as a Machop on JP Pearl)
Chimchar (Hatched from an egg in Diamond)
Eevee x2 (VGC10)
3x Pikachu Coloured Pichu (Event)
2x Gyarados (Guess...)
And some I don't know the authenticity of:

Mesprit (Wi-Fi trade).
The other day, my younger brother encountered a shiny Geodude on Emerald, but it went and died. Same brother has a VGC Eevee that he evolved into a Vaporeon, and Gyarados.
My older brother has Gengar (caught as a Gastly, at Midnight, in front of Mr. Fuji in Lavender Tower), Gyarados (SoulSilver), Girafarig (Pearl) and a VGC10 Eevee.
When I played Sapphire, the Poochyena that attacked Birch was shiny...
