    Wotter?

    WOTTER?!

    That's...

...brilliant! No, seriously. I'll actually be disappointed if it won't be Wotter.

I dunno, Wotter might be too close to Water, which they might consider to be something confusing when spoken.

This makes me wonder - do they do focus groups or what when picking the American names? Or is it a random "whatever we come up with that's not copywrited" thing?

There are two people who write and come up with the Pokemon names. They consult each other and a few other PUSA people when naming Pokemon, but that's it.

    Two guys?

    "Hey...Jim, look at this."
    "Heheh...that Pokemon is fat!"
    "And..lol, it's a cat!"
    "Let's name it Bulkitty!"
    "DUDE!"
    "DUDE!"
    "RIGHTEOUS!"

That sounds like a great job.

A hard job, more like it. You have to have a huge vocabulary and think outside of the box.

It's also challenging because you have to come up with names that are copyright-able.

Hmm... if PUSA, is the current translators of Pokemon names, who handled the names of the first and second gen Pokemon?

Makes me wonder if Nintendo of America's teams of translators ever see the Pokemon games for translation.

Aha! I knew it. Serebii is holding back on us all. I wonder why. It's interesting that he hasn't even come close to hinting about it at his forums, but he comes here and does it.
And freakily enough, I came up with Wotter too, without seeing Habunake's post. XD
    It is perfect, though.
And its evo shall be FLOTTER!

I still think Ampharos is one of the best English names.
I fear the quality is slipping, though. I still think of Perap, not Chatot. Ah, well. Perhaps that's because this is the first generation that I have known all about the Pokemon before they got English names.

Cheh. I don't think I can ever get used to 'Chatot'. I mean... WTF, it's only one letter away from 'Chatbot', a word which brings back horrible memories that I'd rather not think about.

Oh well, luckily I name all my pokemon anyway.

'Leafeon' is a good English name for Leafia.
Probably, but I still like Parsleon better. I'd be so freaking happy if they called it that. Because I have no life.

I'd rather Foleon. I can't remember who suggested it though. I'd like PorygonZ to be Porygon 2.1...

The translating team for the Pokemon games have always been led by NOA's enigmatic translator going only by the name "Nob" (You'll find cameos of Nob throughout all the games in Trainer names) and is generally made up mostly of the same people every time.

PUSA doesn't translate the games, they control their lisencing, marketing and distribution in the exact same way they control the anime, NOA's in house translators are and always have been 100% behind the Japanese - English translation.
