Thread: Contests - Why is Beauty Blue and Cool Red?

I was wondering, is there any particular reason why Gamefreak chose to represent Beauty with the color blue and Cool with the color red (okay, technically orange, but described as red in text)?

Shouldn't it clearly be the other way around? After all, most of the world considers the color blue to be a cool color, while red is viewed as a warm, beautiful color. What was the reason for Gamefreak's color choices?

I disagree. I find blue much more beautiful than red.

The games are made in Japan. Where generaly Red is a fierce color and Blue is a serene one.

Not to mention how you find each color is absurdly subjective, but in Japan this concept of Red and Blue is extremely integrated in the culture.

Also each contest stat color also corresponds to a battle stat and a perfomance stat (and heck, possibly a battle frontier dome). With Attack being Red and Special Attack being Blue to drive the point home.

Interestingly, the actual color that represented the Cool attribute was the same color that represents the Fire-type, however, no Fire-type moves were Cool moves (all were Beauty in Gen III, with two Tough and one Smart added in Gen IV).

Blue is a calming color, whereas Red is a color that makes people alert.

It makes perfect sense that Blue is Beauty (added alliterative appeal!), and Red is Cool.

Since when? Blue is a color that represents ice and cold. Red is a warmer, more beautiful color. If you want a calming color, think pink.

If someone wanted to relax, they might go visit a big, beautiful blue lake. Or they look up at a beautiful blue sky, letting it's beauty soothe them.

And there's a difference in being "cool as ice", and being "cool and badass". THAT'S the kind of "Cool" Red represents in Contests. If the Contest Attributes were "Cool" and "Warm", THEN maybe Blue would be Cool.

Also, this is Pokemon. Power Rangers has nothing to do with it. D8 I turn your attention to Milotic now, considered in the Pokemon World to be the most beautiful Pokemon in existence. It's a Water-type Pokemon, whose color is...wait for it...blue. Milotic himself is a reddish-pink and yellow color, but he's still a fish who lives in blue waters. Water is Beauty, therefore Blue is Beauty.

Pink might be soothing to some, but to me it's a bright and annoying color that is cute and meant to draw attention to someone who wants attention. It's not a color that's a serious beauty like Blue, or a fiery cool like Red.

Or what about a beautiful red sunrise or sunset? Also, explain why are most Fire-type moves Beauty moves? There isn't even a single Cool Fire-type move. GameFreak is contradicting themselves.

Also, what about Arcanine and Ninetales? They basically represent male and female beauty, respectively, and both are Fire-types.

Beautiful scenery is a subjective thing; of course sunsets are pretty. And fire is very beautiful to look at; the color red, on the other hand, isn't exactly the color of Beauty. Blue is mostly a mellow color, as I said earlier, while Red is a bold and alerting color.

Attributes aren't nature or weather, so the blue=cool because of ice is silly. o.o; But you insist on using, so I'll tell you this: A majority of Fire-moves are beautiful because fire is that: Beautiful. The color red isn't as "beautiful" as the calming and relaxing color blue, though. There has been research on colors, I believe, and I don't have resources to link to or whatever, but it seems accepted that blue calms people down, while red is meant to make people alert.

And I'll repeat what I said earlier: being cool, as in cool to the touch, is not the same as being cool that people admire and think "wow that person is so cool". When someone says "wow that person is so cool", they don't mean that they're cold or ice: they mean "sir, you are a badass". Those two cools have VERY different meanings. Blue represents "cold", but it is not a "cool" color. Do you see it yet? D8;

Originally Red was consider masculine and Blue was considered feminine. I for one think it makes more sense that way so that corresponds accordingly. Also "blue is a cool color" means calm not radical and badass. Red is radical and badass it is the color of blood for Arceus sake.

Also, take a look at the Powerpuff Girls. Blossom's colors are red and pink, and she clearly is the most beautiful of the three.

Why do you keep bringing up Power Rangers man?! @A@; They have nothing to do with Pokemon! And if we're going to use Sentai as an example, don't use an American one: let's look at Engine Sentai Go-onger, for example.

The main hero is a red Go-onger; naturally, he's a very cool guy, hot-headed like a standard shonen hero.
The blue "ranger", the blue Go-onger, is much more mellow, more calm, even acts like the "mom" for the team.

Notice that is vastly different from how the US sees red and blue. Different cultures, different views. But seriously, I said 3 times so far that fire being red doesn't mean Beauty should be Red. @A@; It makes no sense.

These games are made in JAPAN, by JAPANESE people. Therefore, the colors of coolness (a.k.a badassness), and the color of beauty, will be how the Japanese see them. That is why Red is Cool, and Blue is Beauty.
