Default Best old game for a beginner?

I'm trying to get my mom into the Pokemon games. I tried with Pokemon Soul Silver but there were too many unfamiliar pokemon and she didn't like the dual screens. So I'm going to get her something for the GBA.

I'm thinking Fire Red may be the best choice. It's one of the latest Gen 3 games and it has her favorite beginner pokemon Charmander/Charmelon/Charizard. Plus the gym leaders are familiar and I'm more than qualified to help her out with the type differences.

I kinda feel like I answered my own question however if anyone has anything to add or suggest I'd appreciate it.

Yeah, FireRed/LeafGreen seems like the best choice.
    I'd go for that.

Oh, yeah. FireRed and LeafGreen are perfect choices. If not, you could always start her out the old fashioned way, with Red, Blue and Yellow.

FireRed or LeafGreen would be good (she could choose Charmander in either of those), whichever you can find cheaper :)

Just beware of bootleg copies. There are tons of them floating around on Ebay and Amazon. If you need any links about how to tell the difference between a fake and authentic cartridge, let me know :)

personally if she finds FR/LG too much i think it'd be best to start her out in the G/S/C era. I did for my mom and she seemed to be able to grasp it well enough when she had the time. Silver is now her favorite ;)

Echoing everyone here, FR/LG. As you said, the locations familiar, and you can only get the first 150 pre-E4, giving a nice learning curve of all the Pokemon. Also, I find it cute that you're getting your mom into it. :)

Note that it also has a Teachy TV and a help screen for her.

FRLG. Help screen, and the 151.

As a second option, RS. It's good.

As others have said, Fire Red and Leaf Green are your best bets. They're the classic games with a modern sheen on them, and the postgame quests can help ease you into all of the new Pokémon. After that, though, I'd definitely check out HeartGold and SoulSilver - they were considered to be the best games of the series until Black and White came along to divide opinions, and most of the Pokémon available in the main storyline are from the first generation.

Yeah, I'd go with FireRed and/or LeafGreen. Then, I would move onto Black and/or White.

I'ld echo the sentiments with Fr/Lg, uses the orginal pokemon, is a simple enough main story line,

However I would avoid HG/SS until she has played either Platinum or Black/White.

Get her to play FireRed, then once she completes it the small amounts of Johto Pokémon post-Dex will ease her into HeartGold.

Thanks. She always carries around these cheap little electronic games so I thought it would be better if she had something more fun to play with.

I wish they had that when I first started playing. Would've saved me a bit of trouble.

I think yellow might be good because you have the pikachu that follows you and you get all 3 starters! and with the pokemon art changed so howthey looked in the anime then. Just a thought
