I didn't see the beginning, but I did come in after WTP. Dragon Sneeze is kept. This Scolipede is pretty tough. I like how Excadrill does that drill bit thing.

Ah, Pikachu's impressions are always fun to watch. I don't know about anyone else, but Axew has really grown on me. Sure he's not strong, but he serves as a nice foil to Pikachu.

Good Team interactions here. Dragon Sneeze was translated properly. Ash's decision to battle Pikachu still has me scratching my head though.

This was arguably the first episode in which Iris was given an explicit amount of focus. Before this episode aired, we had absolutely little about her to go by.

Most of the focus came through Iris' sense of purpose throughout this entire journey. At an undisclosed time before this series began, the elder of her village requested Iris to raise a newly-hatched Axew and evolve it into a Haxorus. By accomplishing such a task, Iris will be considered to be an adult in her village (a rite of passage). In the original version, the elder said that the Axew was "only a day old," whereas in the dub, Axew is apparently a "few days old."

With this much pressure on her village's elder to succeed, Iris tries to rush Axew's growth. Again, as a relatively young pokemon, Axew still lacks the battling experience that is necessary for such growth. Iris herself is unwilling to go out of her safety zone to raise her Axew, and was relieved to hear from Cilan that is perfectly acceptable to take this progress slowly (there is no rush).

To make her storyline more interesting, the writers gave Iris a pokemon that won't obey her commands. Since this Excadrill was able to effortlessly defeat the Scolipede that defeated Pikachu and Snivy, and endure attacks from Pansage and Tepig, we can assume at this point that he is the most powerful pokemon belonging to the main cast right now. It will be interesting to see how the writers can establish a relationship between Iris, who lets everything happen as it is, and an Excadrill who refuses to obey anyone's commands. At the very least, both Ash and Dawn expressed interest in trying to get their disobedient pokemon to battle alongside them. Iris just says that the day will come when she and Excadrill can fight together, but doesn't act on it and make that a reality quicker. This lax disposition is what makes Iris far more unique than female leads in the previous series.

Another important highlight of this episode was the trio dynamic which exists between Ash, Cilan, and Iris. Ash, who has acted relatively mature in the past few series, is now considered to be the immature member of the group. Ash was getting impatient by Iris' wishy-washy style of training her Axew, and requests multiple times to battle her. Iris contrasts Ash's brash and impulsive mannerisms to the civilty and courtesy that Cilan presents when he is in battle. Despite their differences, these three are still connected. Ash and Cilan listened to Iris' story with the upmost respect and interest, even suggesting ways in which she can tackle her problems. At the end of the episode, where Ash (and even Cilan) suggests that Axew should battle one of Ash's pokemon, Iris still refuses.

Others have said this in the past, but this is the first episode that expresses an outward and real interaction between all three members of this group. Previous episodes showed Ash's relationship with Iris, or Ash bonding with Cilan. This is also the first time in which Iris and Cilan actually interact with one another, when Iris suggested that Cilan should be the one to help her Axew grow.

On another note, TRio is tasked to retrieve a Meteonite that is said to contain a powerful energy source, and to do so, they must work together with another field agent named Flint. This storyline would go on for a few more episodes.

Favorite episode of BW so far. ;D
It was extremely entertaining and I liked the Cilan/Iris trainer battle A LOT.
Dragon sneeze, ha, and Iris' backstory was...mysterious.
    I don't like Scolipede's voice, doesn't seem intimidating enough.
"Holy crap! I have a brilliant idea! Paula can be the fourth member of the group!
Now that Brock is gone, someone has to do the cooking, right
    ?"
