I think the issue with "afro" is not that the word or hairstyle itself is taboo, but the fact is it existed originally as a symbol of African-American pride and was linked to the Civil Rights movement and "black is beautiful".

So, using it as a gag-hairstyle I guess is the issue, since it's taken a legitimate hairstyle that was once a symbol of pride and turning it into a joke.

Yet no kid can tell just by looking at it that it's an afro or ask their parents what that strange hairdo is?
