Default AG 101 (102?): "Seaman! The Elite Four Drake Enters!"

Sorry for the lateness of this. I’ve had tests to study for/birthday celebrations to attend to, so I haven’t had the time to write this. But, as they say, better late than never:

-The episode starts at a dock in the middle of a battle between Satoshi and an unnamed trainer. Satoshi’s using Kortoise while the trainer uses Hassamu. Kortoise uses some sort of fire attack (Flamethrower?), but it misses. Hassamu responds with a Hyper Beam attack, but Kortoise tucks itself into its shell, negating the effects of the attack. As Kortoise emerges from its shell, unharmed, Satoshi smiles and throws up a peace sign. Hassamu’s onslaught doesn’t stop as it charges with what I think is a Metal Claw attack. Kortoise responds with Overheat, which hits the Bug-Type. Hassamu faints from the attack, and Takeshi (who’s been refereeing) declares Satoshi to be the winner. The trainer says that Satoshi must be so skillful because he has seven Houen League badges.

-Nearby, Genji is seen watching the battle from afar.

-Elsewhere in the dock, a restaurant is seen. Inside, it’s revealed that Musashi, Kojirou, and Nyasu are working there part time! As Musashi and Kojirou are cleaning, they wonder where the twerp could be at the moment. After looking longingly at the ocean scenery, Genji walks through the door! Musashi and Kojirou inform Genji that the regular staff isn’t there today, but Genji doesn’t seem to care. He orders a hot milk with sugar, and tells the trio that it had better taste the same as it would if the regular staff was there. Team Rocket is intimidated.

-Outside, Satoshi and the others are looking for a place to relax after the recent battle. They spot the restaurant that Musashi and the others are working in, and they decide to sit at one of the tables outside the building. After settling down, Masato brings up the recent battle, and how Kortoise had a type advantage, and Satoshi states that he won’t lose to anyone who challenges him. Just then, Kojirou comes outside to take the customers’ orders, but when he notices who they are, he does a double take. It’s the twerps! Kojirou nervously runs off, confusing Satoshi and the others.

-Inside, Genji notices Satoshi and the others sitting outside.

-In the restaurant’s kitchen, Musashi and the others plot to kidnap Pikachu. However, they decide against their regular tactics when they imagine Genji making them blast off again with his massive punch. They’ll have to bide their time for the time being.

-Back outside, Takeshi asks Haruka about her next contest. Suddenly, Genji approaches the group and tells the young coordinator that her choice of pokemon is very important. She thanks him for the advice.

-Inside, Musashi suddenly realizes who Genji is…he’s a member of the Shi Ten’nou! Team Rocket is surprised.

-Outside, Genji compliments Satoshi on his battle with Kortoise, pointing out that he had good timing. Satoshi thanks him, and introduces himself, and his friends follow suit. Genji then invites everyone to his boat, and everyone agrees that that’s something they would like to do. Suddenly, Musashi appears, and Genji brings up the milk. Musashi is intimidated by the Shi Ten’nou member, but she is relieved when she’s complimented on the drink. I think at some point, the Team Rocket members are invited to Genji’s boat as well.

-The gang (including Team Rocket) is led to the edge of one of the docks. Genji stands at the edge and stares at the ocean, waiting for his boat to arrive. The boat emerges from the distance, but it looks more like a pirate ship than the small boat Satoshi and the others were imagining! Members of the ship greet their captain as the ship docks. As Kyamome fly overhead, Takeshi marvels at the ship’s large masts. Masato then asks Genji to show them his pokemon, and Satoshi eagerly joins in. Genji asks for a battle with Satoshi instead, and the young trainer agrees almost immediately. Takeshi yells at Satoshi to wait and think about his decision, but Satoshi is confident that he’ll win. Meanwhile, the Team Rocket members say that it’s their chance.

-And the battle starts! Genji chooses a Komoruu while Satoshi chooses Pikachu. Satoshi seems confident, thinking that Pikachu’s speed will give it the advantage. Pikachu starts off by using Thunderbolt, and it hits Komoruu directly as Genji seems calm. It uses the attack again, and Komoruu just sits there and takes it, again. Genji’s pokemon starts to glow as Haruka and Kojirou comment on the battle.

-Komoruu now takes the offensive as it charges toward Pikachu with Double Edge, but the mouse pokemon is able to avoid it with a Quick Attack. Pikachu then uses Iron Tail, but Genji remains calm. Komoruu responds with Dragon Breath, and then follows with Dragon Claw. The two attacks prove to be too much for Pikachu, and the little pokemon faints.

    ---commercial break---

-Satoshi picks up Pikachu as Takeshi comments on Genji’s strength. One of the members of the crew (I think he’s the guy who’s listed as Yoshimitsu in the credits) describes how strong the captain is as the battle resumes.

-Genji brings out Chirutarisu, and Satoshi responds with Juputoru. Masato is worried because Grass Types are weak against Flying Types, but Satoshi seems to have a plan. He tells Juputoru to jump from mast to mast, allowing it to reach the flying pokemon. It then uses Bullet Seed, but Chirutarisu is able to avoid it by ducking behind one of the masts. Juputoru then uses Leaf Blade, but Chirutarisu seems to have disappeared! Suddenly, it appears from behind with a Peck attack! Chirutarisu then uses Dragon Breath, knocking Juputoru to the ground! Genji’s pokemon then charges downward with a Sky Attack, but Satoshi’s Grass-Type is able to dodge it with Quick Attack. It then throws a Leaf Blade at the opponent, but Chirutarisu dodges that attack as well. It answers the attack with Solar Beam, which hits Juputoru. The pokemon crashes right through two barrels before slamming against a wall, knocking it out.

-Genji picks up Satoshi’s pokemon and tells the young trainer that its injuries aren’t too serious, but that it should go to the Pokemon Center right after the battle. Satoshi recalls his pokemon as the battle comes to an end. Genji invites everyone to have dinner on his ship after Satoshi’s pokemon are finished with the Pokemon Center, and everyone happily accepts. On the side, Haruka is holding the now-conscious Pikachu. As Musashi puts on a pair of rubber gloves, Kojirou offers Haruka a drink. She takes it, putting Pikachu down in the process. Musashi quickly snatches the pokemon up, and Team Rocket jumps to their balloon, which is seen floating nearby. The trio recites their motto as they reveal who they are to the group.

-Genji wastes no time in calling out his Bormander. The dragon pokemon uses Dragon Claw on the balloon’s basket, causing the balloon to violently shake. Musashi drops Pikachu, and Bormander swoops in to save the pokemon. Bormander, now with Pikachu riding on its back, uses a Flamthrower attack on the balloon, causing Team Rocket to blast off again. As Haruka looks up Bormander on her Pokemon Zukan, Satoshi comments that this must be the true power of the Shi Ten’nou.

-That night, Genji, Satoshi and his friends, and Genji’s crew all enjoy dinner. Genji tells Satoshi that he shouldn’t focus so much on losing, but that he should instead always seek stronger and stronger opponents. Now, with a much-needed lesson in overconfidence behind him, Satoshi is ready for his next adventure.

I really liked this episode. Satoshi barely touched Genji’s pokemon, and it’s good that Satoshi got a lesson in humility. I also really liked Genji’s character, and I hope he makes a reappearance in the future.

So it was Ash's overconfidence rearing it's ugly head again? ah well, I'm glad Drake gave him some advice for future battles.

Hey, one I finally managed to DL! All right, I can finally review!

...once my mind stops singing "Oh it is, it is a glorious thing/to be a pirate king!" at the very thought of Genji.

Seriously, I was mentally synching him to that song.

So when TR attempted a theft from right in front of him, my reaction was "Nobody steals from the king of the pirates!"

I know he's not *really* a pirate, but really now.

Oh yes--does Genji repeat himself, or does he just use a lot of words with repeating syllables?

It's either 101 or 102. By broadcasting order it is 101.

In any case. I have found the preview for the original AG101, just need a place to put it for download.

So how angry was Genji when TR took of with Ash's Pikachu? besides of course releasing the all powerful Salamence (or is it Salamance, I get confused)

I saw how Brock, May and Max reacted, but not Ash or Genji (I can't seem to type their Japanese names, sorry).

He was ticked, that's for sure. His tone of voice gradually increased in level until he sent out Salamence. Not sure what he said though.

Sounds kinda Prima-ish IMO, but maybe that's just because Drake's a member of the Elite Four.

BTW, doesn't Ten'nou translated as Emperor only refer to the Emperor of Japan. And other times it just means Deva or Heavenly Lord or something like that? Because you have that Shi Ten'nou means Four Emperors on your website. A friend of mine told me that Ten'nou as Emperor only refers to the Emperor of Japan. Is she wrong?

I really don't understand why so many people are comparing this to the Prima ep. Prima only battled Ash because he was way too cocky and wouldn't shut up about it. But in this ep, it was Drake's idea for them to battle.

"So many people"? I'm the only person I know of who's compared Drake to Prima...

And why does Ash need another lesson in overconfidence? He's already had plenty from other trainers. That's what I was trying to say.

I've heard it translated as "4 Heavenly Emperors".

Good episode, I guess. I would've prefered it if Ash had managed to KO at least ONE of Drake's Pokemon. Maybe they'll have a rematch one day?

I wonder if we're finally going t o see all of the E4 in one reigon? That would be a nice change of place. I'm still frustrated that Will and Karen were basically totally forgotten about in Johto. Especially Since Dark Types never really had a proper introduction or explanation - and Karen would've been the perfect one to do that.

My idea is that maybe, whenever a trainer wins the league du jour, he's taken to a special building similar to the Pokemon League building in the games. There, he/she will fight the Elite Four, with no audience or anything. Since we never found out what happened to whoever won the Kanto League and the guy who won the Jouto League (Toshiya), it's perfectly feasible for them to create a method for fighting them after the league without contradicting themselves.

Of course, Satoshi won the Orange League and didn't go to any such room, but that could be because a) the Orange Islands doesn't have an Elite Four, b) it's a small league with only half the number of badges than the other places, and c) it's not considered so much of a real "league" the way the "main" leagues are.

If anything, the Orange League itself is an "elite four" with a Pokemon champion.

True, however from what I've heard this seems to be different. Ash was a bit cocky over his recent great victories, but not nearly as much as in his past "cocky" episodes, he has grown after all. And overconfidence only played a part in his loss to Shelgon, where he had Pikachu come in too close.

Really, Drake taught Ash several things Prima didn't, since he set out to educate Ash due to his recognizing Ash's talents in the first place. He showed Ash is is just as important to read the mental and physical state opponent and their Pokemon as it is to read the state of your own Pokemon. Drake watched how Pikachu faught, and waited for Ash to make a command he could take advantage of, instead of trying to find a way to win as things were.

And then Drake gives a new perspective for Ash when it comes to getting stronger and more skilled. According to Murgatroyd he tells him to not factor in his chances of losing when it comes to battles, to not worry about losing at all, only to continue to search and challenge ever stronger opponents as that's the best way to increase your power and experience more quickly (paraphrased).

As for Ash, he does perform significantly better than he did last time he faught an Elite 4 member. He had an advantage against Prima in type and a disadvantage in type against Drake's Pokemon, but it looks like he still managed to last about twice as long in both battles than he did against Prima/Lorelai. That's certainly noteworthy. But against a rapid-fire bunch of extremely mighty attacks, in Altaria's case releasing a Dragonbreath, Sky Attack and Solarbeam in fairly rapid procession, he just didn't have enough to match them with.

Erm, if I remember correctly, there was as small tournament before the Orange League. It was mentioned, and it showed Ash winning a few matches. But unlike the Kanto League, they didn't bother to show the bulk of the matches themselves in a torunament format.

Then Ash wins the tournament, and as a result - he gets an exhibition match with Drake. Who's like "The Elite 1" for the Orange League - since it's smaller.

That's how I would imagine the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn Leagues to go. You can win the tournament and you'll get the trophy and stuff. But you also get to face off agains the Elite 4 just to prove how good you are and try to get into the Hall of Fame.
