It's been a while, hasn't it? Sorry for the delay, but it is time to get back in the swing of things. This week's topic is what unconventional (just not Overused) tiers are preferred overall and why? Feel free to discuss and debate (civilly) the strengths, along with flaws of certain metagames.

Personally, DPP UU has to be my favorite tier of all time, not just to personal success in it, but everything in it felt right. I was able to experiment with how my teams were set up and what they were based off of. It always had variety and no real overcentralizing preference. Venusaur was good, but not unstoppable with Pokemon like Blaziken around, and Blaziken in turn was stopped by Milotic, and so on.

Doubles during DPP also holds a special spot in my heart due to just how fast paced and methodical it ended up being.

Currently, I'd have to choose the RU tier as it has enough variety, without weather or superpowerful pokemon in the way

I'm just starting out in this advanced style of battling and looking for some tips on how to train my Pokemon. I've done some research into it and I familiarized myself with some of the terms I'm sure I will be coming across, so I know how it work I just need some help starting. Since I'm just starting out I figured I better stick with one type and once I get used to the style of training and battling I would then move onto different types. Now what I'm not sure of is what to train each Pokemon for, the nature the Pokemon should have, and the item I should give that Pokemon. When it comes to the moves that Pokemon will know, if it does really good with a certain move feel free to tell me, but for the most part I should be able figure out what move to teach it on my own. The type I choose to start with was bug type, and the Pokemon I choose to train are:

Ariados (NU)
Nature: ???
Held Item: ???
Team Role: ???
Moves:
1. ???
2. ???
3. ???
4. ???

Galvantula (RU)
Nature: ???
Held Item: ???
Team Role: ???
Moves:
Wormadam (Trash Cloak) (NU)
Nature: ???
Held Item: ???
Team Role: ???
Moves:
2. ???
3. ???
4. ???
Volcarona (OU)
Nature: ???
Held Item: ???
Team Role: ???
Moves:
1. ???
2. ???
3. ???
4. ???

Armaldo (NU)
Nature: ???
Held Item: ???
Team Role: ???
Moves:
1. Rapid Spin
2. ???
3. ???
4. ???

Shedinja (NU)
Nature: Lonely
Held Item: Focus Sash
Team Role: ???
Moves:
1. Endure
2. ???
3. ???
4. ???

*I found a video that had some tips on training a Shedinja, but I still need the role it will have on the team.

So can any one help me get started on my bug type Pokemon team, please?

So, here's a rain team that is a bit of a revisioning of one I had before. Its definitely not made because the old one sucked, however, as I made it last September and its been undefeated since then.

Cleansing (Politoed)
Item: Choice Specs
Ability: Drizzle
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 HP/252 SpA/4 Spe

Hydro Pump

Hidden Power Grass

Ice Beam

Focus Blast

Behind the name: I named it after the song by Mors Principium Est, Cleansing Rain. I think my reason for that is obvious...
Tactical explanation: Its a bit different from other rain leads in that it actually packs some offensive oomph. With Choice Specs and 252 Special Attack EVs, this thing HURTS.

Eternity (Meloetta)
Item: Expert Belt
Ability: Serene Grace
Nature: Naive
EVs: 56 Atk/252 SpA/200 Spe

Relic Song

Close Combat

Thunder

U-Turn

Behind the name: I named it after the song by Dream Theater, The Dance of Eternity. My reasoning for that is because it dances, and is pretty hard to counter meaning it could last for what seems like an eternity.
Tactical explanation: At first glance, you may think that Meloetta is an odd choice for a Rain team. However, it is not. It makes an excellent Rain Mixed attacker due to its ability to use Relic Song then spam Thunder with its boosted Special Attack.

Tornado (Forretress)
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
Nature: Relaxed
IVs: 0 Spe
EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 SpD

Rapid Spin

Stealth Rock

Volt Switch

Gyro Ball

Behind the name: I named it after the song by Rhapsody of Fire, Tornado. Why? It spins. That should be good enough. :P
Tactical explanation: This thing is meant to remove hazards and remove any that the opponent set up. After which I either Volt Switch to something else, likely Qwilfish for more hazards or go on a bit of a Gyro Ball sweep, depending on what's more feasible.

Kill-Suit (Qwilfish)
Item: Black Sludge
Ability: Intimidate
Nature: Impish
EVs: 252 HP/200 Def/56 Spe

Toxic Spikes

Spikes

Waterfall

Pain Split

Behind the name: The name was inspired by the Symphony X song, Dressed to Kill. Why? Qwilfish’s entire body is a lethal weapon, so he really is, “Dressed to Kill”.
Tactical explanation: This thing is meant to be annoying as hell, laying down both spikes and stalling you out with Pain Split. Also, thanks to intimidate, he's even harder to kill.

Kinetic (Rotom)
Item: Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Timid
EVs: 4 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe

Volt Switch

Shadow Ball

Thunder

Trick

Behind the name: Named after Arcturus’ Kinetic, because it seems fitting enough in song title and from the overall feel of the song.
Tactical explanation: Scarfed and EVed for Speed, hits like a brick with Thunder and can catch you off guard with a Trick. Nasty little bugger.

Weballergy (Galvantula)
Item: Life Orb
Ability: Swarm
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 SpA/4 SpD/252 Spe

Thunder

Bug Buzz

Substitute

Hidden Power Ice

Behind the name: Named after Sonata Arctica’s Weballergy, which is quite fitting because Galvantula creates webs that can give people a reaction that could be very similar to an “allergic” reaction.
Tactical explanation: This thing can use Substitute + Life Orb to get down to Swarm and make Bug Buzz hurt a lot, plus Thunder in the rain hurts too. Hidden Power Ice is great utility and catches threats to the team like Dragonite off guard.

Hey guys.

Starting now, we'll be introducing a series of articles designed to get people into competitive battling. These will be posted and stickied here as a reference. If you have any suggestions as to how to improve these articles, ideas for further articles, or if you've written an article yourself which you think should be posted, then please, PM me or another of the Battle Center mods!
Introduction [*1]

So, this is basically a guide I've written up to teach people the basics and fundamentals required to succeed at raising Pokémon to their optimum efficiency. I'm sure by this stage you're thinking you're fairly experienced with your Lv.100 Charizard that dominates everyone in-game... Think again!

First and foremost, you may be wondering: what exactly is raising your Pokémon? The answer is simple: it's carefully breeding the best Pokémon with the right natures, defeating specific Pokémon exclusively, stuffing them up with vitamins, and giving them the moves they need to succeed.

Now, I know that sounds like a real mouthful, but trust me, it really isn't all that bad when you get used to it. Let's start with the very basics of Pokémon in general even: raising your Pokémon. Most people would just catch any old Pokémon that appeals to them and simply battle their way through the game without paying attention to Natures, IVs, EVs, or proper movesets. But to raise your Pokémon properly, you need to break down each component of leveling them up.

Natures [*2]

There are 25 Natures in total; each raise one stat by 10% and lower another by 10%. These are vital for a Pokémon to reap the benefits with the stat it uses the most and the stat it uses the least. Each Nature has its merits except for Hardy, Serious, Bashful, Quirky, and Docile. These Natures should not be used since they provide no beneficial stat boosts to the Pokémon.

Looking at this, if one of the Pokémon we wanted to use was Alakazam, we would either go with Timid (to minimize its terrible Attack stat we don't use and to maximize its Speed stat) or Modest (to minimizes its terrible Attack stat and to maximize its Special Attack stat).

IVs [*3]

*This section can be skipped as it requires a LOT of time and patience for every Pokémon you wish to raise, if you are raising the Pokémon in-game yourself*

IVs, or Individual Values, are hidden values in the game that generate the random stats of your Pokémon and also affect the move Hidden Power. They are hidden numbers that range from 0 to 31 and tell you the quality of a Pokémon's stats. 0 means that particular Pokémon's stat is the lowest it can be, while 31 means that stat is at its best and is considered a perfect IV. When a Pokémon is encountered or taken from the old man at the Daycare Center, its IVs are produced and once produced, they are stuck with the Pokémon forever.

If you really want to get into this, I suggest looking here: Smogon's Breeding and IV Guide

EVs [*4]

EVs, or Effort Values, are probably the most important part of prepping your Pokémon for competitive battling. EVs, unlike IVs, are not already written into a Pokémon's make-up when you encounter them. They are additional values that you give them for defeating other Pokémon, whether you realize it or not. Every Pokémon can have a maximum of 510 EVs in total and no more than 255 in any one stat. 4 EVs equate to one point raised. For example, a Gyarados that gains 24 EVs in Attack when it's Lv.57 will have its Attack raised by 6 points when it levels up. EVs do become more apparent as your Pokémon gets to higher levels, so when that Gyarados was a Magikarp it might only get one- or two-point stat raises when it's Lv.20, but when it's a mighty Lv.99 Gyarados, it could have its stats raise by 20 points when it levels up.

Now, although 255 EVs can be put in one stat, no more than 252 should be put in any stat because that is the highest divisible number of 4 in 255, saving you 3 EVs for another stat. As you notice Pokémon's sets, you will find a lot of Pokémon go with 252 EVs in two stats and 4 in another, usually common in sweepers. If we look at Alakazam from earlier, we can see that the preferred amount of EVs would be 252 in Special Attack, 252 in Speed and 4 in a less important stat (HP, Defense or Special Defense).

Of course, by now you're wondering how the hell you can put EVs onto a Pokémon, but it really isn't too difficult if you can count or have a lot of money to burn (in-game, of course). Every Pokémon gives a certain amount of EVs. Here is a list of every Pokemon and their EV yield:
List of Pokémon by effort value yield - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia

For our example Alakazam, we could battle 252 Bulbasaur to get our 252 EVs in Special Attack and 252 Charmander to get our 252 EVs in Speed, but that's really impractical, not to mention they don't really exist in the wild. Obviously, this depends on your location and each Pokémon's rarity, but if you check locations, which Bulbapedia is great for, you can find places like Altering Cave in Emerald which only has Zubat to battle, each giving one Speed EV.

Luckily for you, there are EV-related items. [*4.1]

Vitamins

Although battling for EVs is the most common way to obtain EVs, you can use vitamins to increase the stats of your Pokémon. Each vitamin gives ten points to a Pokémon's relevant stat, but a maximum of ten vitamins can be used per stat, so you can't rely on them for everything.

HP Up gives ten HP EVs
Protein gives 10 Attack EVs
Iron gives 10 Defense EVs
Calcium gives 10 Special Attack EVs
Zinc gives 10 Special Defense EVs
Carbos gives 10 Speed EVs

Held items:

Macho Brace: Doubles any EVs given to the Pokémon holding it, but halves their Speed stat during those battles
Power Weight: Adds 4 HP EVs to the Pokémon after each battle, no matter what Pokémon they faced, but halves their Speed stat during those battles
Power Bracer: Adds 4 Attack EVs to the Pokémon after each battle, no matter what Pokémon they faced, but halves their Speed stat during those battles
Power Belt: Adds 4 Defense EVs to the Pokémon after each battle, no matter what Pokémon they faced, but halves their Speed stat during those battles
Power Lens: Adds 4 Special Attack EVs to the Pokémon after each battle, no matter what Pokémon they faced, but halves their Speed stat during those battles
Power Band: Adds 4 Special Defense EVs to the Pokémon after each battle, no matter what Pokémon they faced, but halves their Speed stat during those battles
Power Anklet: Adds 4 Speed EVs to the Pokémon after each battle, no matter what Pokémon they faced, but halves their Speed stat during those battles

Berries

If you want to reset your Pokémon's EVs, there are berries which do the exact opposite to vitamins.

Pomeg removes ten HP EVs
Kelpsy removes 10 Attack EVs
Qualot removes 10 Defense EVs
Hondew removes 10 Special Attack EVs
Grepa removes 10 Special Defense EVs
Tamato removes 10 Speed EVs

Other

There is one very rare beneficial virus in Pokémon known as Pokérus; the chance to encounter it on a wild Pokemon is 3 out of 65,536. If you battle this Pokémon or catch it, you contract it and it spreads through your team like wildfire. This virus doubles the EVs an infected Pokémon receives, and once a Pokémon is infected, it can't be cured. The virus loses its ability to spread after two days, so either spread it as much as possible immediately or place a Pokémon with Pokérus in the PC, where the virus will remain frozen and still be infectious when it is taken out.

Ability [*5]

Most Pokémon have quite a few Abilities at their disposal, which is why it's best to use the one that benefits the Pokémon best. Alakazam gets both Inner Focus and Synchronize as Abilities, with Magic Guard as its Hidden Ability. Inner Focus isn't all too helpful; considering how fast it is, it's very unlikely to get outsped and flinched. Synchronize is quite situational too, but it's slightly better than Inner Focus, as it can put both you and your opponent in the same boat. Magic Guard, on the other hand, prevents Alakazam from taking damage from entry hazards, such as Spikes, or other forms of indirect damage, like Toxic, Sandstorm, Life Orb recoil, and so much more. Magic Guard would definitely be the preferred Ability here.

The Ability you choose to run can often be influenced by the set you wish to use.

Items [*6]

A good battler always has the best suited items on his Pokémon, whether it is a Choice Scarf for the extra speed needed, Leftovers to take more hits, or even berries like Lum to grant the Pokémon temporary immunity to status moves, which is very handy for some sweepers. See here for more:

Held item - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia

Movesets [*7]

"Moveset" is basically a term given to the four moves your Pokémon can have. These can be level-up moves, breeding moves, Move Tutor moves, event-exclusive moves, or moves brought back by previous evolution(s) or Heart Scales. By now, I hope that you've come to realize that your Charizard's Ember, Flamethrower, Fly and Smokescreen may not be quite as good as you thought initially. It's important to choose moves that allow the Pokémon to perform at its peak by using moves that help your team (Heal Bell), hinder your opponent's (Stealth Rock), give you great coverage on your opponent's Pokémon, and utilize its moves to suit the particular EV spread and Nature you've chosen.

Until you've become quite experienced with team building, I suggest you use some of Smogon's sets, or those of other competitive battling sites. Let's take a look at Smogon's top-listed set for Charizard:

Set 1: Choice Scarfer

Ability: Solar Power / Blaze
Nature: Naive / Hasty
EVs: 72 Attack / 186 Sp Attack / 252 Speed
Item: Choice Scarf
~ Fire Blast / Flamethrower
~ Earthquake
~ Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Electric
~ Air Slash / Crunch / Outrage

This is fairly self-explanatory really. Now that we know about Natures, EVs, items, and moves, we should be able to make an ideal Charizard, one that trumps anyone else's who doesn't raise their Pokémon to their full potential.

Quote:

This Set takes advantage of Charizard's above-average attacking stats. 72 Attack EVs are there to ensure that Charizard OHKO's any set that Heatran runs (except Shuca Berry versions) and OHKO the standard Calm Mind Mismagius with a Crunch with SR in play 100% of the time. The other moves are there for coverage. Fire Blast/Flamethrower does good damage on everything which doesn't resist it, and the Hidden Power of your choice can nail Swampert/Dragons/Gyarados.

Conclusion and Regards [*8]

And that brings us to the end of this little guide. I think I could've went on about some other crap, but yeah, no one wants to read any more of it

First off, I'd like to thank you, the reader, for reading even bits of this and making it all worthwhile. I would love to hear some feedback on this, or if you guys feel I should add anything to this, or remove anything even. I would also like to thank Smogon University, Bulbapedia, and StrategyWiki.

We've all seen the usual strategies. The Fake Out Mienshao, the Choice Chandelure, theTailwind Latias. But what about all the others you almost never see? Discuss some you've seen or done here!

I'll start with two Shuckle strategies.
First, I'll often use a Shuckle-Trick Room combo in double battles while using power trick on the first turn. Assuming the Trick Room mon survives to use it, you've now got a Shuckle with over 200 power (at level 50) going first with Stone Edge. I usually then use a Bronzong as the Trick Room mon for its Hypnosis.

In single battles, I'll use a different Shuckle. I set up Trick Room from a first mon, and switch out or let it faint to send out Shuckle. It'll then use Power Swap to essentially split the foes attack stats in half, then start using she'll smash while the foe struggles to land any good hits. You guess what happens next.

My only problem with the second is that I forgot my Shuckle had the Contrary ability.

Reuniclus
Item: Life Orb
Nature: Quiet
Ability: Magic Guard
EV's: 252 HP / 4 DEF / 252 Sp. ATK
Moves:
Psychic
Shadow Ball
Trick Room
Recover

I think the choice of Reuniclus to lead the trick room team is a fairly obvious one. Huge Sp. ATK, huge bulk, super low speed, access to easy recovery and an awesome ability. She's really what keeps this team going. I went with the obvious choice for STAB, and chose psychic over psyshock because I've got a lot more going for me in this team for ATK over Sp. ATK as you'll notice. I had originally gone with focus blast as his secondary attack but switched it to thunder due to the prominence of rain and because I've got fighting pretty well covered elsewhere.
Ferrothorn
Item: Occa Berry
Nature: Impish
Ability: Iron Barbs
EV's: 252 HP / 128 DEF / 128 Sp. DEF
Moves:
Leech Seed
Power Whip
Spikes
Ingrain

Yeah, I've got two lvl 100 Ferrothorns. *sigh* I've got a lot of time on my hands. The thing is, I can't really decide which one to use. I've been using the first one mostly and she's been working well. Really punishes physical attackers well and takes those hits like nobody's business. Then once a flamethrower comes out it's time to explode. The second one is able to take a bigger variety of hits for longer though, and has different kind of hazards. I'm also thinking he could drop ingrain for stealth rock so he would be able to do both kinds of hazards. So advice on picking between these two would be awesome.
Katherine (Escavalier)
Item: Shell Bell
Nature: Brave
Ability: Shell Armor
EV's: 252 HP / 252 ATK / 4 DEF
Moves:
Iron Head
Megahorn
Pursuit
Swords Dance

Escavalier is hands down, my favorite Pokemon. Look at that design! Cavalry snail? UH-mazing. Katherine here can really take the hits and dish them right back out. That immense 405 ATK stat only gets more ridiculous after a swords dance. After that, a STAB megahorn will bring down a lot. and she's pretty tough to get away from with pursuit. All in all, it's a pretty straightforward set-up here, not much deviation to be had on this poke.
Machamp
Item: Choice Band
Nature: Brave
Ability: No Guard
EV's: 252 HP / 252 ATK / 4 Sp. DEF
Moves:
Dynamic Punch
Stone Edge
Ice Punch
Fire Punch

I've always been a fan of this four-armed BAMF. I really like his movepool and for this particular set, that movepool really helps fill in some gaps with ice punch and stone edge. The main reason I chose machamp over something like conkledurr though, is the dynamic punch that can't miss. I like that 100% chance to confuse an awful lot.
Slowking
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Quiet
Ability: Regenerator
EV's: 252 HP / 4 DEF / 252 Sp. ATK
Moves:
Scald
Flamethrower
Nasty Plot
Trick Room

Slowking is here to fill in should Reuniclus go down. Her job is strikingly similar to that of Reuniclus but I wanted to focus a little more on power here. Hence nasty plot. I chose to forgo the secondary STAB attack in lieu of having another option for fire attacks on my team.

Mixed (but mostly special) Wall

Scrafty
Item: Sitrus Berry
Nature: Sassy
Ability: Intimidate
EV's: 252 HP / 4 ATK / 252 Sp. DEF
Moves:
Drain Punch
Crunch
Fake Out
Bulk Up

Well, I gave in and went with a Scrafty here. I really don't like the design but it fits my team so well. It virtually garentees my trick room set-up if I'm playing doubles because of fake-out and with its defenses being what they are, it can really have a lot of staying power from abusing drain punch. I took crunch over detect for the awesome dark/fighting coverage and bulk up so that it can tank physical hits as well as special without the EV investment.

Well, there you have it, the result of over 250 hours of gameplay. I'm not exactly planning on winning any huge OU tournaments with this (not that I wouldn't be willing to participate). I'm more interested in being able to wallop my friends and do well on random wifi matchups. I would greatly appreciate any feedback/constructive criticism you can offer me.

I also have a Paraflincher togekiss I was originally going to fill scrafty's spot with, but ultimately I think scrafty is a better fit since he can work well in and out of trick room and togekiss is more of a panic button for when I run out of trick rooms but if you guys think that would work better, please speak up.

Thanks in advance for your feedback! I look forward to hearing from the community!
