My thoughts on Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2

Wow...what a plot twist that was! Just when I thought that GameFreak was getting predictable, they decided to give Pokémon's fifth generation an unexpected spicy surprise! I thought I had it all figured out, but then something like this pops up out of the blue - I love it when that happens! None of us managed to predict this 100%, although I think my good friend @Silktree came closest.

Now, first off, let's see what points I got wrong:
- Pokémon Grey Version. Well, we all got that one wrong didn't we?
- Kyurem not getting a "form" (although Masuda claims that they are Pokémon, not formes). Well, I had to reluctantly accept it after the discovery of the space in Black and White's ROM.

Now, what I got right:
- The next games being on the Nintendo DS.
- The next games being released in 2012 (like anyone doubted that though).

Anyway, my first point:

TWO Forms?! Well, that was a surprise - they look like a Zekrom-Kyurem mix and a Reshiram-Kyurem mix. I guess that finally puts the nail in the "Kyurem is the original dragon" theory's coffin. But what could their relationship be now?

What's interesting to note, is that Black Kyurem (as named by Junichi Masuda is the mascot Pokémon of Pokémon Black Version 2, whereas Zekrom was the mascot of Pokémon White, White Kyurem is also the mascot of Pokémon White Version 2, whereas Reshiram was Pokémon Black's mascot. According to Junichi Masuda, they are not new forms - but new Pokémon! What could this mean? At the end of Pokémon Black, we see N flying away on Reshiram (flying away on Zekrom in Pokémon White). As these are direct sequels, does that mean something happened to N? Was N's dragon (or its powers) absorbed by Kyurem, needing the energy? As another story will be unfolding, I can't even begin to guess - but I am excited.

I was right on another point though. Something leaked just before Pokémon Smash! started, but Smash's reveal confirmed it's legitimacy:

What's that at the bottom? Oh, it's only Meloett-WAIT, Meloetta!? Indeed! Meloetta will apparently be having its own short, called Meloetta's Meloetta's Sparkling Recital! I had predicted that Meloetta would be unveiled this year; but I didn't expect this early (Well, I didn't expect the next main series game to be released this early either). Well, that leaves Genesect as the only Generation V Legendary who hasn't appeared in the anime yet (As Black Kyurem and White Kyurem will be appearing in Kyurem VS The Sacred Swordsman - Keldeo), so will it co-star with a Generation VI Pokémon next year?

You might remember how in a previous blog post, I said that I think that Generation VI will begin in 2013 - well, considering this and that Black 2/White 2 are on the Nintendo DS and not the Nintendo 3DS, helps solidify that theory. After all, the DS might survive in 2012 - Pokémon + Nobunaga's Ambition, Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2 show this; however, by 2013, it will be all about the Nintendo 3DS. One thing that supports this is the Japanese release month of BW2 - June 2012. Red, Green, FireRed and LeafGreen are the only main series Pokémon games to be released in Japan outside of the September-December range, so why have Black 2 and White 2 been thrown into the middle of the year? (The first for the main series) - so that the games can be released internationally this year, is my bet.

If we look at past Pokémon games, the average time gap between Japanese and American launch has been 7 months (including the months of release). If we go by this as a rough estimate, Black 2 and White 2 will be released in western territories in December - which also conveniently hits the Christmas market. Now, considering that even games featuring voice acting are receiving quick western releases (Kid Icarus: Uprising and Mario Tennis Open being released in Europe 1 day after the Japanese launch, for example) we could see Black 2 and White 2 released closer - perhaps even a day after, but I wouldn't count on it, especially considering how Pokémon games are far more reliant on text (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D was also released in Europe the day after Japan; but as it's a remake, the text would have already been translated once).

One thing I do find amusing, is that the original codename for Gold and Silver was Pocket Monsters 2. Black and White tried to replicate Generation I; so now it seems like Black 2 and White 2 are trying to be the true sequels?

It has been a long time since I have been truly this excited about the franchise - not since Black and White were first announced. I will be waiting like an impatient puppy dog for any bit of new information I can!

I dont know what people are complaining about, theres no reason to rage. The fans get 2 new games to play new pokemon( Black Kyurem/White Kyurem), probably a different story and other stuff.

I believe by "new Pokemon" as oppose to new formes, I think Masuda is trying to say that these are our pseudo-Gen VI Pokemon meaning we might be getting new Pokemon related to the Unova Pokemon added in the sequels, which could only mean one thing: evolutions/pre-evolutions.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that. What I would guess is, Masuda wanted to make the differentiation because Black Kyurem and White Kyurem are not mere alternate appearances; that they are something unique (a fusion perhaps?), so should be treated differently when compared to Kyurem.
