Here is my Pokemon anime viewing experience for someone who has been watching from the beginning:
1998/1999: Like most people I got into the show during Kanto and watched the show religiously in new episodes and repeats. I've probably rewatched this saga more than any other, simply because KIDSWB used to rerun it to death and I always saw the same episodes over and over.
2000: Watched all of Orange Islands, still a bit Pokemon fan
2001-2003: Johto started
I notice a lot of people are putting up similar themed blogs about the older seasons, the reception of the anime's popularity in the U.S., and/or the original trio. So here's my take on it. Yes this is going to be a "too long, didn't read," but I know some people are going to read the whole thing merely out of curiosity (and to understand what the hell goes on inside my head), and why I have such great dislike for this arc over the last 10 years. Here we go, folks:
Well with a new gen comes new predictions, 8 months from now I'll see how much this is right:
1. Ash (sadly) will probably stay. God how I wish his story would end.
2. Iris and Cilan will both leave. I really just don't see Cilan staying the way Brock did. Its just not something I can see the writers doing anymore.
3. Team Rocket won't be in the next series.
4. Iris and Cilan will be the only older characters to get cameos in the next arc.
Yes, those are all male cosplayers.

10 years ago today I was reading Japanese spoilers online about Ash's Charizard and Squirtle coming back and Ash finally having a battle with Gary in the Johto league, something I waited for, for years. At the time I was a huge fanboy of Ash's Kanto starters and was happy they reunited, and I couldn't believe the tedious Johto saga was finally ending.
Also at that time we had that first AG cast poster leaked that showed Ash/Brock in Hoenn clothes, May, Max, Prof. Birch and the Hoenn
