So Fairy-types are the new type in the block. It's a very awesome thing to introduce since that opens up to more design possibilities, and also give existing Pokemon a new type to fit into. There is another franchise that introduced a new type quite late into the series, and it was introduced in the third Generation. The series I am referring to is Yu-gi-oh (5D's is the 3rd Generation). The thing about introducing a new type is that it's extremely volatile to do so. The current type matchups are very skewed and imbalanced, yes. But introducing a new type is bound to create more problems than it will solve. For example, the rumor that "Fairy is weak to Steel"? That just won't work.
