Is it just me or have fans became less attached to characters over time?
I remember back in day when Misty or May left cast how most people were disappointed, sometimes even shocked being sad to see their favorites go. Likewise whenever there was made tread about it in past majority was more welcomed toward their return than not wanting to see more, feeling how past companions weren't fleshed out as much as they could have been with there being left room to do much more. Which in reality ...

I noticed that in most cases when character develops changing a bit personality wise instead of people appreciating his growth they usually pertain it to regression viewing characters as becoming "boring and uninteresting".

Like with May for example.
She started out as girl who didnt liked pokemon just wanting to travell,later on learning to like them realizing what she wants to do with life becoming coordinator growing into more mature and selfconfident character ...

Answer is quite simple.Many people grew up with Ash,Misty and Brock having found memories of group which started whole pokemon show in first place achieving iconic status over the years being most recognized group in world.

Reason why many fans not only from 90s era but also those who watched older series later on want them back is because they miss colorful dynamic and chemistry this group had over the course of original series.From Ashs naivete and stupidity,to Mistys sarcastic ...

One of surprising things i noticed is how many people tend to remember this region only for bad things completely missing on anything great coming from it.

Surely some things weren't treated well but that's not to say this saga didn't had its highlights which were very enjoyable to watch.
