Anime Suggestions

Before I joined this community, I used to think that anime was something nerds watch because they have no social lives. But after I watched One Piece, I realized: anime is something nerds watch because they have no social life. Or at least, I'm a nerd who has no social life, because I spent three full weeks spending every hour watching One Piece.

Point of the matter is, before I came here, you couldn't pay me to watch anime because I thought it was just the stupidest, geekiest thing in the world. Only later did I realize I was being an humongous, ignorant jerk. One Piece is one of the best things I've ever seen, and while I still won't say "I love anime," I want to give them more of a try.

So, as the title says, can you guys suggest some good anime to me? I'm open to any category, as long as it's not an overly-romance-type show. The only anime I have ever watched to completion are Pokemon and One Piece, so I suppose there's a lot of options.

Thanks in advance if you can recommend some!

Full metal alchemist. That and brotherhood.

You might like sword art online? Or Soul Eater? Maybe Bleach?

Those our pretty good shows i'd suggest.
  2. Johtohfiller's Avatar
Cowboy Bebop. It's awesome in pretty much every way.

One Piece is pretty manly. So these recommendation are based on manliness and manliness alone. Samurai Champloo, definitely, first and foremost. Then move onto to Cowboy Bebop, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Fullmetal Alchemist (or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood), Yuu Yuu Hakusho, and Soul Eater.

For others, I guess my personal modern favorite is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. This post here also lists some pretty great titles.

Ok, first things first: You gotta change that background. I shouldn't have to highlight your entire post just to be able to read it.

    Now, on to the recommendations.

I'm linking these to hulu, because you can watch them without any sort of subscription, but I'm sure that at least some of these are also on Netflix. Some I don't have a link for you, but I'm sure you can find something, if it sounds interesting. Some of these have sequels, reboots, or spinoffs, but I figure that if you like the original, you can find more on your own. They're in alphabetical order, not in order of preference.

    Ah! My Goddess
Fantasy comedy. A nerd is blessed with the Norse goddess Belldandy (Verðandi in the original old Norse) for a girlfriend.

    Attack on Titan
Fantasy action. Human-eating Titans have ravaged the earth and left humanity on the brink of extinction. After a century of hiding in a walled city, mankind has an opportunity to fight back. Warning: graphic violence.

Fantasy action. A Japanese teen becomes a Soul Reaper, forcing him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife.

Science fiction. In the near future, computers are built in android form. Chi, an android with advanced AI, is found abandoned in the garbage. Explores the relationships of people and AI.

    Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure—No link
Sci-fi. Some comedy. A boy sees things that no one else can—giant mecha that wage a battle in his city. One local scientist theorizes that those events take place in an alternate universe.

    Fullmetal Alchemist
Fantasy. After an accident that leaves them both with unique disabilities, two alchemist brothers seek the knowledge of the philosopher's stone in order to restore themselves to normal.

Full Metal Panic! (Unrelated to the above.)
Action Comedy. A paranoid, weapon-toting, security-minded military officer is assigned to protect a high school student. Action and hijinks ensue.

Fantasy Comedy. A classic. Kagome, a modern Japanese teenager, falls into a shrine's well, and finds herself embroiled in a conflict between demons during Japan's feudal era.

    Neon Genesis Evangelion—No link
Science Fiction. Three teenagers must pilot giant mecha in order to protect the earth from the mysterious, alien Angels that appear. Another classic, but it gets really weird as it goes on.

    Outlaw Star—No link
Sci-fi comedy. Gene Starwind, a mercenary and bounty hunter, stumbles across a spaceship that holds the secrets of the galactic ley lines.

Fantasy Comedy. Lina Inverse, an insanely strong sorceress, kills bandits and monsters for profit. Along the way, she just happens to save the world.

    Tenchi Muyo
Sci-fi comedy. Tenchi gets involved with various alien girls from around the galaxy. It's not quite as perverted as I just made it sound. Honest.

    Tokyo Underground—No link
Action fantasy. A subterranean society exists where people have the power to manipulate various elemental forces like fire, water, magnetism, and gravity.

Science fiction. Vash the Stampede, the human typhoon, has a six-billion double-dollar bounty on his head. Where he goes, destruction inevitably follows.

So yeah, I definitely have a type. Hopefully this helps, though.

    My top recommendations

Bakuman - an anime about two students aiming to be top mangakas (comic authors). The show also includes how manga is published, and how an anime is created. It's very detailed, and there's a lot of reference to existing mangas (such as One-Piece). I'd say Bakuman is a good start if you are new to anime.

Death Note - supernatural thriller. I'm pretty sure you heard about a high school student picking up a notebook that can kill people. It's one of the most popular anime (even getting a live action film) and one of the many "Must-See" animes.

If I can think of other anime, I'll be sure to recommend.

Can't go wrong with the likes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Steins;Gate, Attack on Titan, Death Note at least. The descriptions on AniDB, where my links lead to, and other sites (MAL, ANN, A-P), probably explain each show better than I can myself. If you're feeling adventurous, maybe even Yakitate Japan!! or Hikaru no Go could work. (don't be put off by the unusual subjects, they are both awesome)

If you hadn't ruled out romance, I would've also listed Clannad and its sequel. Oops, I did anyway :p

Well, if you watched and loved One Piece, my first inclination is to suggest Naruto.
  9. Karisse's Avatar
Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Good stuff there.
  10. Gard81's Avatar
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Tiger and Bunny, Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell from the top of my head. They are a bit on the bloody side (some more than others), but they do have themes that are brilliant and that make you "think"...

Congratulations on the character development! Well, if you're into mystery and want to take a breather by watching a short anime, there's Death Note, which if I recall correctly is 37 episodes long. It's one of those smart kinds of anime, only the main character who you know what's on their mind most of the time are the villain. I finished it in 3 days with how interesting and cool it was with the action, suspense, cliff hangers and cool twists, so hopefully it doesn't bore you.

I read this and figured I'd suggest some anime of my own. Perhaps you'd like Darker than Black and Samurai Champloo. I also recommend Baccano. It has a bit of romance, but it's also very action packed.

Thanks so much for the all great suggestions!

Oh, and DraxxorT, the reason for that is because of the skins. With the skin I have, I see it perfectly, but I'll change it for others sake.

Code Geass (nobody else mentioned this yet!?), Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Naruto, Attack on Titan, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bepop.... that's all I can think of now...
