Quick Rant on Let's Plays...

So last night and this morning I was feeling adventurous, so I decided to go to the Let's Play section of the Minecraft forums and check out some unknown let's plays. It was a pretty good time, I found a few really good ones and subscribed. However, I did notice a trend that kind of perplexed me and also kind of made me angry.

A lot of times I would click on a video, then have to sit through an ad. Now I generally have no problem with sitting through an ad, it supports people who do Youtube for a living and whatnot, however what that means is that the person chose to ask Youtube to monetize that video. Now we're talking about videos that have like 5 views or less here. I'm not sure exactly what the ads pay per view, but it's definitely less than a penny, so I can be pretty confident that this person is not making shit off of this video. So why the fuck should I have to sit through an ad? Your video has 1 view and I am doing you the courtesy of doubling that amount, even with the intent to subscribe if I like it, and you think it's a good idea to make me watch a fucking ad? Come on people. You should not be monetizing your videos if they are getting less than 50 views each, and that is being very nice.

Even if you suddenly have a spike in popularity and all your dreams come true, you can still go back and monetize videos that were not monetized before. It's not like it is a one time thing or something.

Honestly Youtube's monetization scheme is a joke. Mostly anyway.

The ads are actually YouTube's way of allowing copyrighted material. The money from the ads actually goes to Mojang to satisfy copyright agreements. It has nothing to do with the person's decision to monetize the video and everything to do with YouTube trying to allow copyrighted material on their site.

The ability to monetize the video for yourself only comes if the video is completely 100% original content.

Yeah, I don't get it either. I don't monetize my vids.

Yeah. Recently (I don't know if it's just my computer or if it happens to other people) whenever I watch a playthrough video, the ad plays but shows no actual video, only audio. It gets really annoying because the ad that does it the most is one that just plays music and has some sort of grunting noises with one actual sentence you can understand -_-

That's not true at all. A lot of people make a living off of Minecraft videos. You choose whether you want an ad on your video or not. This is because Mojang is awesome.
