How can that exit possibly lead people to think that he died? Granted it's terribly depressing (especially for people who overempathize with all the wrong characters, like me), but he's very clearly alive, and there's nothing to indicate that that's going to change any time soon.

Yet earlier I ran across TWO people who were adamant that he died in that scene.

Yeah sure he could die later, but that's true for any other character who leaves ...
