My Review of The Origin (Misty Calls Masquerain)

Plot: Basically the plot of the Generation I games with some things glossed over and the Pokemon Tower plot more fleshed out. Not much to say, except the whole story with Cubone and its mother was VERY well done. I liked the fact that Red caught them all, except for Mew. I would have liked to see his journey to catch Mew!

Characters: Not really much to say here, either. Red is kinda like Ash in his better days. He starts out really stupid, but grows out of it quickly. Giovanni is great in this special! The flashback to his childhood (he and Red really are more alike than I thought) was unexpected, and he actually seemed to have a valid reason for disbanding TR than just because. Team Rocket is brutal like they were in the Gen I games. Green is Green.

Sound/Voices: The remixes of the game tracks were all remixed perfectly! I was worried about some of the tracks sounding like bad fan tracks, but this wasn't an issue here. I hope the soundtrack gets released soon. The Pokemon voices sounded more animalistic, which is good to differentiate it from the main anime, reminds me of the Pokemon Stadium cries. The human voices were good, as expected.

Animation/Art: I don't like the art style much, but I have to admit it is unique (did NOT expect Red to look like that). My favorite Red design is the FRLG design/Brawl's Pokemon Trainer design, but besides the point. The angular faces look weird, but I did get used to them. The Pokemon art is good, though I expected them to use the manga-like style of the first two gens, but I'm not complaining. For those who don't know what I'm going on about, compare this to this.

Battles: They were fast-paced, but they were fluid and fun to watch. It's kinda weird seeing physical power collisions without explosions, though, since I'm so used to it by now. By far, my favorite was Hitmonlee vs Rhyhorn and Squirtle vs Charmander. My only problem is the overuse of Charizard which kinda makes him look like a starter spammer noob, which kinda makes sense when you consider how many people did the same...speaking of Charizard, I didn't mind the XY promotion at the end like others did, it was just a quick scene.

Overall Rating: 9.5/10 by itself, 9.9 when compared to the anime at its worst, 8.6 when compared to the anime at its best. I can only imagine how much better this would be if it were longer (but not TOO long).

*NOTE that I do NOT like Red more than Ash, but when you consider that Ash is a victim of marketing and bad writing, then of course Red will seem *better*.

I thought it was okay at best, probably what the current season of the anime should be more like. The only problems I had with it were the overuse of Charizard (but then again, did Ash not overuse Pikachu at times?) and the fact that they shoehorned in Mega Charizard because X/Y was coming out soon and they needed an excuse to advertise them. Other than that, it was okay, though I still prefer the first season of the anime over it, for nostalgia's sake.

I prefer the first couple of seasons too, but not the rest of the anime.

I kind of had this feeling, but I got over it, and I get why they did it. They needed to show variety on Red's team, with how many Pokemon he was supposed to be catching, and with how fast the series was going, his team seemed to be constantly changing, so they needed at least one constant Pokemon character. And naturally, they chose Red's starter, Lizardon.

speaking of Charizard, I didn't mind the XY promotion at the end like others did, it was just a quick scene.
I'm surprised at that. I actually loved the XY tie-in, and squeed so hard when Lizardon mega-evolved :') Aside from the fact that it was just generally awesome, I think it was a nice way to put a new spin on an old story, integrating the old and the new. I doubt they will, but I'd love to see Origins for the other games in the same style. Though, if they did, I'd really want GSC's Origins to have Crys as the protagonist--never forget! XD (someone seriously needs to make a fanfic of this)

I almost did one explaining why Lyra replaced Kris, but by the time I had the idea finalized, the controversy had pretty much died down, so I decided it was no longer relevant.

My question here is, are we supposed to take information from Origins as canonical to the games? In a way, I hope not—I like having the ability to interpret things as I please.
