Can someone explain this? I'm stumped.

My whole family has iPhones, and aside from my dad, we all use iMessage to send texts. For some reason, when I try to send my mom an iMessage, my phone does what it does should iMessage not be available on the receiving end and sends the message as a regular text message. My mom hasn't touched the settings on her phone, so that should not be happening. And her phone is always on. I'm absolutely stumped here. It's really not too important since we both still are getting messages from each other, but this is going to drive me nuts until I figure it out. Ok, I managed to get one iMessage to my mom, my dad responded(using my mom's phone because she went to bed), and the next message I sent was sent as a normal text message. Could it be that if you take too much time to unlock your phone when you get an iMessage, it becomes a normal text message?
