Wow...excuse me while I just cry tears of joy for a little while at how decent this was.

:bawl:

Okay, I'm back. Well, I'm very shocked. No, I'm surprised...this dub...was very nice for a change. I personally think that the dub of the main Pokemon Anime when under 4Kids was/is far superior to the current dub of the main Anime by TPCi (even though the 4Kids' dub also had its many flaws), so I naturally went in to watching this on Pokemon TV with VERY low expectations. I was expecting Sarah Natochenny or Michele Knotz to voice Red, Bill Rogers to voice Brock, Carter Cathcart to voice Professor Oak, and the like, ridiculously bad script writing, etc. Boy, was I ever wrong here! Okay, I'm going to be fair in my evaluation of this dub: it wasn't the best dub I've ever seen, but it's very okay/decent, and frankly a HUGE improvement over the current dub of the main Pokemon Anime under both TAJ Productions and now DuArt Film and Video.

I mean, you can sit down and enjoy this, the voices actually fit the characters for the most part (I'll go into that later), the script writing has no alliterations, rhyming, or Ash's cool speak of the day and is decent, all the JPN BGM was kept intact, and even the vicious bite scene where Squirtle tears into Charmander is kept! I haven't enjoyed watching any Pokemon Media in the English dub since 4Kids stopped dubbing the anime, instead forcing myself to watch onwards, but this was great and the first time I really have since then!

EDIT: Some people said their version of the Origin on PKMN TV didn't have Squirtle biting into Charmander viciously. Mine did, so...O_O.

So, let me discuss how I felt about the dub:

1. Voices (Thanks to @Mr. Blaze for List of Actual VAs and Confirmation, as well as @Lord_Mewtwo for Confirmation about Kyle Hebert voicing Prof. Oak)

(a) Red-

Episode 1: Okay, I think it's a little too deep for a 10 year old boy. However, this actor still has very solid acting skills, and that makes up for his voice sounding a little too old. Being frank, I'd rather hear this voice on the main anime for Ash than Kayzie Rogers' or Sarah Natochenny's versions of Ash, but I think this actor can act nicely. He is still okay/decent in the role, and to me, I feel like it is Vic Mignogna. For some reason, I hear traces of Edward Elric in his voice for Red.

Rating: 7/10 = Average.

Episode 2: Overall, sounds better. Voice is a lot less deep, and lighter in pitch. Acting is excellent, but voice only improved from okay to good. Weird "surfer dude" accent slipped through that I didn't like when Red told the citizens of Lavender Town he'd take down Team Rocket, and screaming during battle could use some work. Besides that, really sounded a lot more like a little boy than he did before.

Rating: 8/10 = Good.

My Predicted VA: Vic Mignogna

Actual VA: Bryce Papenbrook

(b) Blue/Green-

Episode 1: Wow, pretty good and fitting for the character. I have no idea who voiced him, but I like this actor. I'm one of the few who liked Carter's Gary Oak, even if it was a bit too nasally at times, but this guy is a very good replacement in the role. You can see the cocky and better-than-you attitude is expressed very nicely here. Sounds a little forced in odd places, though.

Rating: 8.5/10 = Very Good.

Episode 2: Sounds a lot more natural and less forced. Snarky tone has improved, and honestly, Lucien is excellent as Blue/Green right now. The scream was awesome, and his delivery and acting have improved from Episode 1's dub. He's the standout here from the English dub of The Origin, IMO.

Rating: 9.5/10 = Excellent.

My Predicted VA: Unknown

Actual VA: Lucien Dodge ( @Chocadial got it!)

(c) Professor Oak:

Episode 1- A little too deep at times, but still a LOT better than Carter's Professor Oak voice in the current dub of the main anime. I'd ideally have liked to see Stuart Zagnit reprise the role, but this guy is very decent and is a suitable replacement. I still get the feeling he is wise and kind, and a weathered sort. It's not Stuart Zagnit's Professor Oak, but it's decent, and I like it. Sounds a bit like an old version of Gohan from the FUNimation dubs of Dragonball Z (and probably Kai).

Rating: 7/10 = Pass.

My Predicted VA: Kyle Hebert

Actual VA: Kyle Hebert ( @Lord_Mewtwo also got it!)

(d) Brock (Ep. 1 Voice-Only Character): Wow, I like this voice for him. A little goofy at times, but it serves its purpose. I'm actually thinking of Brock as a serious, well-mannered, kind sort of guy, as opposed to the burly old thug/gangster I hear from Bill's Brock in the current dub of the main anime (no offense intended). While I'd prefer Eric Stuart's Brock, this actor's Brock is also surprisingly good. I can hear some Ichigo in his voice, leading me to suspect someone we all know.

Rating: 8.5/10 = Very Good.

My Predicted VA: Johnny Yong Bosch

Actual VA: Johnny Yong Bosch ( @FANG-TAN also got it!)

(e) Guy Next to Lass-

My Predicted VA: Sam Riegel

Chocadial suspects Michael Sinterniklaas may be the VA.

Rating: 8/10 = Good.

(f) Lass-

My Predicted VA: Kate Higgins

EDIT: My friend FANG-TAN suspects Lauren Landa voiced her. Thanks to FANG-TAN for this suggestion.

Actual VA: Christina Vee (Wow...no one got this one!)

Rating: 7/10 = Pass.

Episode 2 Only Characters

(g) Citizens of Lavender Town- Meh. Sounds so generic and lifeless, though-- didn't sound like actual people with personalities, and more lifeless than many COTDs from both English dubs do in the anime.

Rating: 6/10 = Poor.

(h) Reina- I guess it's okay/satisfactory, but the actress didn't have much emotion or put much feeling into it at all. Voice is good, but could've been higher pitched as well. It was still decent, but nothing more.

My Predicted VA: Christine Marie Cabanos

Actual VA: Christine Marie Cabanos (Nice: I got this one.)

Rating: 7/10 = Pass.

(i) Mr./Dr. Fuji- Very good, actually. Got better towards the end, but I noticed in the middle and before the last few scenes with him, the actor that played him gave him some VERY weird accent that didn't seem to fit much with the character. I guess he was going for Dr. Fuji's kinder tone, but it didn't work to well in this context. Regardless, actor nailed the weathered older man tone and sweet feeling overall, so I can't complain.

Rating: 8.5/10 = Very Good.

Predicted VA: Unknown

Actual VA: Kirk Thornton

(j) Marowak- Nothing to say: she sounds just as good as the Original JPN seiyu for it...sounds very similar.

Rating: 10/10 = Perfect.

(k) Rocket Grunts-

(i) Green Haired One: Awesome: his actor makes him sound like a real evil dick.

My Predicted VA: Doug Erholtz

Rating: 9/10 = Excellent.

(ii) Blue Haired One: Good: he sounds very natural and not forced at all.

Rating: 8/10 = Good.

(iii) Fat, Stubby One: Weak: guy sounds pretty bad, actually. Rather generic sounding for my tastes, but then, so is the character.

Rating: 7/10 = Average.

2. Script Writing

What's this? No truly ridiculous lines, the characters are able to be taken seriously and are likeable the way they are written, there's no rhymes, alliterations, and wind jokes everywhere! Pinch me: I must be dreaming!

There were a few liberties taken here. I only saw a fansub of the Origin, so I saw Red going "Damn it, damn it," but he didn't say that here.

Episode 1- Two Poor Lines

(a) There was a lame line about not addressing Brock as Brock from the lass and guy next to the lass, instead of "Brock, sir" (in JPN, "Takeshi-san") or something that was slightly altered to saying just "Don't talk to Brock that way!"

Better Line: "Don't talk to a Gym Leader that way"

(b) Professor Oak refers to Grass Type as "Plant Type." Big deal: I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Episode 2- Two Poor Lines

Not too happy with how the script writing/dialogue went this time around, actually. Pretty average, and it felt more like CC and Z Pang America's usual crap we get in the (TPCi) dub of the main anime (though nowhere near as bad as that, some signs of it were oddly present here).

Thanks @Gen6fan for this:

(a) I'm gonna remember you for this, kid!

Correction: Why not, "you'll pay for this" or "mark my words, you're gonna regret this, kid!"
I just don't think the actual line is all that threatening.

(b) What are you, a little kid?

Logic: Couldn't help but laugh at this one. BW reference anyone-- namely Iris?

Correction: Could've been changed to "You are such a wimp" or "Don't be such a coward."

3. Original JPN BGM

Episode 1

100% Kept.

Episode 2

100% Kept.

4. Edits

Personally, I don't care in the slightest about this, but for those otakus out there who do, the kanji was kept when Red was looking in his Pokedex in Episode 1's English dub. Hooray....

Episode 1- Scream was altered that Squirtle did. Some people had the scene omitted entirely. Do not care at all myself, but for those of you who did, nitpick the hell out of it. Maybe some people just don't like hearing animals suffering in pain, I guess?

Episode 2- Marowak's scream was significantly toned down when it was killed. Once again, I don't care, but feel free to nitpick all you want, guys. That is the nature of many of the fans of the JPN Version of the Pokemon Anime, I guess. :/

5. Errors

It's NOT pronounced POL-KA-MON, it's POK-AY-MON in the English Version of the Anime. Seriously, some of the side characters keep saying it incorrectly.

All in all, I'm very impressed. It seems to me TPCi exported this dub to Viz Media or Studiopolis in Los Angeles, because many of these actors do work in other dubs like Naruto and Bleach over there. However, it could've also been done at NYAV Post if Mike Sinterniklaas voiced in this, so it could go either way. I frankly would LOVE to see the main anime dubbed at either of those locations if so, instead of at DuArt Film and Video (unless they themselves dubbed this), and I'm happy to see the dub come out so decent/okay. All in all, a nice dub and a huge improvement over how abysmally I feel TPCi has handled the main series' anime dub.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, guys. Thanks, and hope you enjoyed reading what I thought about it!

Episode 1 ENG DUB Rating: 8.5/10 = Very Good.
Episode 2 ENG DUB Rating: 7.5/10 = Average.

Random girl talking about the Gym Leader at the Pokemon Center is definitely Lauren Landa's voice. I heard way too much of her voice in Tales of Xillia's English dub.

If Blue (girl) were in The Origin, I would have liked the dub voice to be that...

I was actually able to sit through this dub. Hrm. Not amazing, but it's a much better dub than the English dub for the regular anime. Brock was totally voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch - I hear him so much that I will honestly claim that there's no way I'm wrong about this. I still prefer Tomokazu Sugita's Takeshi voice though... it's friggin' Tomokazu Sugita.

I was afraid they'd get the nasally guy to do Blue's voice because well, Gary. Same for Red. The current Ash voice was always grating to me... Doesn't sound like it could ever be Satoshi/Red at all (then again, it's hard to beat Rica Matsumoto and Junko Takeuchi). I may not particularly like Red's English voice, but it's much better than that crap, for sure.

I only saw a fansub of the Origin
Oh yeah, I'd like to take an opportunity to inform people that most fansubs out for Origin are complete, well, ass. There's only one trustworthy group I know that did it, but they're the slowest subbing group in the universe and only have one episode out.

Never heard Lauren Landa before, so you're probably right.

    Same here, man.

    Agreed!

I was too lazy to look up a more accurate sub, so that's why I just watched whatever I could find. Feel free to correct me on any of this if you find some errors. Thanks for the input: I appreciate it. :)

The "damn it" could be a valid translation, I suppose (I don't exactly remember every line in The Origin, but I'll assume that came from Red saying "kuso" or "shimatta" which isn't uncommon even in the current Pocket Monsters anime). But there was one sub that had Red saying "fuck" to Sakaki, which was totally off. That very same sub glossed over Fuji talking about the Kalos region and the Mega Stones.

IIRC, it is the one where Red is saying "kuso, kuso, kuso" and banging his Pokeball against his head: the sub I watched translated it underneath as "Damn it, damn it, damn it." In the English dub of it, he doesn't say anything, and just grunts when he's doing so.

I didn't see a sub where Red said "fu*k" to Sakaki, though, so I don't think it's that one. It could be, though: my memory is a little foggy since I haven't watched it in JPN in a while.

I think the sub I watched did translate the part where Mr. Fuji is talking about the Kalos region and the Mega stones.

Update from Bulbapedia (some user has sources, Twitter I think):

Red is voiced by Bryce Papenbrook
Blue is voiced by Lucien Dodge (voices Chili in the regular anime)
The Lass appears to be voiced by Christina Vee

And you were right on Oak and Brock's voices.

    Nice review by the way!

EDIT: Minor note: Christina Vee also voices Red's Nidoran M.

Sounds like a very good dubbing done here! I hope I get the chance to listen to it - I was wondering how a male voice actor could pull off being the main protagonist of Pokemon (seeing that they're all around ten and 'too young' to have deep voices), but seeing you say it was good, I'm getting real curious :D

Yeah, I'm going to nitpick about this :/ Marowak's original scream was what made that scene especially powerful, an icy, hollow scream of death that made you understand why Cubone suddenly froze. In the dub Marowak did just a simple emotionless mumble as if it tripped over its own feet :/ Did not feel well to me, I wish they'd kept it, but then again dubs usually tone done violent stuff I guess?

I have the same thoughts as you, but what I mean is, I can understand why the dubbers would have to do that. It's not exactly pleasant to hear the Marowak's screaming when it is being killed, you know? Emotionally, that DEFINITELY resonates a lot stronger with me, and I do feel they shouldn't have toned its screaming to death down, but think of the kids that watch that scene...I mean, I'm not excusing it, but I can understand why it was done. Sometimes, the dubbers don't have much choice in the matter.

It's that 5 years from now, some people will STILL complain about this. That's what my point is here.

You're definitely right about the first line also being from the games. However, I feel like diverging from the games would've been a good thing in that instance. Regardless, I can understand their logic now, so thanks for reminding me of that. :)

I'm not sure about the second one, though. Thanks for your input, though: appreciate it!
