I felt like I had to get this out somehow after seeing it.

My little brother is addicted to Minecraft. All his friends play it, and he comes home and spends hours on the computer playing "Creative Mode" or whatever it's called. He's always liked TNT for some reason in Minecraft (because of the destructive power, maybe) so a lot of his time is spent building TNT "cannons" (using YouTube tutorials) and firing them at mountains and stuff. My parents have become a little annoyed at him for wasting his time, and for being destructive, since you know, it's called Creative Mode but he never builds anything.

But today... I was on the computer for a few minutes, then he came and made me get off because he wanted to play Minecraft. And...while I was in the room watching...
There was this village that he was in, and he had built a really small stone room-like thing in the center of the village, it looked like a stone phone booth. And...he...lit a block of TNT...there were villagers nearby...they...went inside the little stone box...and then...the whole thing blew up...and I could tell that he had wanted that to happen, since he didn't seem surprised by it... Then he asked me why I was "looking at him like that", I guess I had a pretty horrified expression on my face.

Needless to say, I ran to my mom and told her that my brother was killing people on Minecraft. She had a talk with him, I'm not sure how it went.

Sorry, I'm still kind of shaken by it and I felt like I had to let it out somehow. ...He's only 8 years old...

    I wouldn't be too worried, it is only a video game after all. I've done similar things in Minecraft, mainly because I was bored and wanted to know what would happen.

    Yeah, your concerns are bit unfounded. At 8 years old I was a cruel and merciless god to my Sims; I'd punish them by locking them in inescapable rooms, I'd remove ladders from the pools to see how long they'd last, and I would devastate their cities with natural disasters. They say there's nothing more cruel than an innocent child. Still, I imagine the crater he made was pretty cool. I know that I've started off survival games by slaughtering a village and claiming it as my base of operations. In the end it's a game, and no less harmful than if he was outside vaporizing ants with a magnifying glass.

    Pfft, they're virtual creatures in a blocky world. Villagers aren't even human. They have no feelings. They cannot think or show emotion. Therefore, they are not people.

    The difference is too large. A virtual image in a video game is completely different from a thinking, feeling human being. Your concerns are a bit farfetched.

    @Miles101, I know that someone I know would talk to you (and the rest of you who commented on this blog) very heavily about how the same case cannot be said for Pokémon.

    Gah, it hurts thinking about the arguments.

    Either way, this is only really troubling if he shows intentions to do this in real life. Maybe he's been keeping up with the news or something...
