Don't Bullshit My Fandom

My friend told me the story of a conversation she had with her mom. It went like this:
Her Mom: "Hmm. What's a fandom? I keep hearing that term."
My Friend: "It's the community of fans around a certain thing, like a tv show, a book or a movie. Stuff like that. My friends and I, for example. We all have fandoms."
Her Mom: "And what are your fandoms?"
My Friend: "There's four of us. All of us like Harry Potter, and three of us like The Avengers. Those are our fandoms."
Her Mom: "What about the fourth? Your fourth friend?"
My Friend: "Uh, her? She likes Pokémon."
Her Mom: "Pokémon?"
My Friend: "Yes, Pokémon."
Her Mom: "Seriously?"
My Friend: "Uh, yeah."
Her Mom: *bursts out laughing*
My Friend's Kid Sister: "POKÉMON!"
I hereby present the bullshit our fandom gets. There are days wherein I wish I had fallen for a different fandom, because we're so discriminated against. People look upon us as childish idiots who have no life. They think we're weird.
You and I know that the truth is this: there is no difference between us and other fandoms. We are not weird among fandoms. We debate, we theorize. We discuss strategy. We research our asses off and and stay up late discussing anything from the most obscure screenshot to Gen 6. We form bonds as a community.
I know we're not the target demographic. This can be a painful and crippling truth sometimes. But I also know that it doesn't take much effort to look past that and see who we really are. We are not a bunch of retards who go "OMGLOLZ PICACHOO!!! KAWAII DESU!!!oneone!!!!eleven!!"
tldr; Don't bullshit my fandom. Also, /rant.
I'm sorry for the rant. Lame Excuse Time: I've been writing heck-tons of angst fanfiction recently. Don't throw rocks, maybe? *awkward smile*
