For us Western fans unfamiliar with the CERO rating system, CERO C is for games rated 15 years of age and up. Let's take a look at past Tales of games for comparison...

Tales of Xillia 2: CERO C (15 and up)
Tales of Innocence: CERO B (12 and up)
Tales of Xillia: CERO B
Tales of Graces: CERO B
Tales of Vesperia: CERO B
Tales of the Abyss (3DS): CERO A (for all ages) (...What? Seriously!? Did the CERO guys even play this game?)
Tales of Symphonia: CERO A (again, what?? Just because the graphics aren't as realistic, doesn't mean some serious stuff isn't going down)
Tales of Legendia: CERO A
(All games before Legendia were rated CERO A)

..........how on earth is Abyss and Symphonia rated E? at least ESRB gave them a T rating for their darker themes.

What do you guys think of this?

I wouldn't let a 7 year old play GTA or something, but those ratings are often decided over the silliest things so I ignore them.

If Ocarina of Time was released today, it'd be rated T. I played the crap out of that game when I was at least 6.

Obviously different cultures have different standards on what is age-acceptable. Japan's CERO rating standards have changed since the release of Tales of the Abyss, hence why newer Tales games are often rated B or C.

The "darker" and societal themes that are prominently featured in the Tales series aren't a foreign concept to western animation, anyway (see: The Land Before Time – A Philosophy of Childrens Entertainment | Guerrilla Ontology). It's just a really common thing for western culture to shelter our children from these concepts in media, or at least portray them as something totally not meant for the eyes of the youth, which in my honest opinion is total BS since it's more enriching than damaging. Horror games and their rather... erm, sublime imagery are a different matter though. Nightmare fuel and quantity of blood in Zelda-esque doses aren't too bad, really.
