Because if you look at the Grass types, how many of them have any Grass on them?
They could have called it Nature or Leaf... They did call it Grass in Japan though, so US/Europe just got it ready...

It was the biggest disappointment for hippies when they learned that you can't smoke "grass" types.
Wood might imply something else. Well, so would grass, but I wouldn't think weed when you say grass.
