I imagine it would probably be a bit complicated for them to explain how these guys weren't regular evolutions in the past games. Also they would most probably have to come up with a new method of evolution for these guys and a name as well (which probably wouldn't be that hard but still).

What are your thoughts on this? Could you see it becoming a reality? Also how complicated would things get?

I would be pretty fine if they retconned megas of pokemon that can still evolve even though i like their designs (except Mega Heracross and Manetric designs, they are awful), give them all an actual evolution and make mega evolution just for fully evolved pokemon and legendaries.

Not sure this would work because Megas don't really have an established identity and play a different role battle wise. Retconning them into normal evolutions would mean retconning stats, giving them an actual name instead of Mega whatever, and things like that.

I think this would be stupid, unless they come up with a very good reason as to why. Pokemon like those above could have a permanent evolution, and maybe still have the Mega Stone - to make it a branch evolution - but retconning the Mega Stone entirely and then calling those Megas the actual, permanent evos would be dumb imo.

If they wanted these Megas to be permanent, then they should have created them as permanent evos in the first place, and give Mega Stones to other pokemon (i.e. other starters)

I don't see it happening just because of how complicated it would be.

Though, alternate permanent evolution still works for me...

I don't think they would have to "explain" it. They haven't done that sort of thing in the past. Why did Magneton suddenly resist Normal in gen II? Why did Misdreavus spontaneously become immune to Ground in gen III? Why was Hyper Beam randomly using SpAtk in gen IV? Whenever Game Freak decides to change the gameplay, they just act like it's always been that way. Otherwise we'd get some BS overcomplicated backstory. Which is nice.

And also if they can't retcon the mega forms of the pokemon that can still evolve they could still give normal evolutions to those pokemon, so a person could choose to either evolve the pokemon or let it stay unevolved and use the mega form instead. But they would need to make the mega form a little bit stronger than the final evo to compensate the fact that it needs to hold the mega stone to mega evolve.

If anything, I can see them removing mega evolution entirely. They did mention that it is something that only happens in Kalos so I won't be surprised if they just go away. I would actually like it since Garchomp, Gengar and Tyrannitar really didn't need the boost ... but I've grown on Mega-Mawile and Amphabulous. I just don't see them making some permanent evolutions and others only Megas since they need names, new move pools and most evolutions don't have that full transformation seen in normal evolution.

I'd hate to see the fans who'd get upset because we weren't only given very few Pokemon, but some of the new Pokemon were repurposed Mega Evolutions.

Of course, there are some Mega Evolutions that are a bit lack luster and don't beat their regular forms with held items, that may be better as regular evolutions because they get items.
