We all love the Nintendo 64 (or, almost all of you), and of course, there was its failed add-on, the 64 DD.

You know, I feel Nintendo could have done better with the 64 DD. The video shown above was from 1997. But after 4 years of development from its announcement in 1995, it was released in Japan of 1999 of December. Months later, the 64 DD was discontinued.

The 64 DD used some sort of floppy disk, not like the floppy disks the FDS used, these:

I don't get Nintendo's decision to NOT use compact disks, which the PlayStation and Sega Saturn used. Instead, floppy disks were used. I guess it's because to not scratch the disk.

Also, it was released in 1999. In Japan. What? Why? WHY? I don't get this. It was likely in development hell, and Nintendo sold it in a weird way. By a subscription service from Randnet. WHAT HAPPENED TO STORES?! If Nintendo sold it regularly, you know, in stores, where the Japanese could have bought more and it could have got its way to the American market!

If you were wondering, Randnet was the internet provider for the 64DD, where you can do many things, including surfing the web. Holy crap, that's amazing. What a wish...

It also had only nine games released for it. NINE! That's less than the Jaguar CD, which had 15 games! And that sucked.

Speaking of the Jaguar CD, some people compare it with the Jaguar CD, because it was released at the end of it's timeline and it tried to increase the N64's lifespan. Yes, that's true. Except it didn't break a lot and this add-on came with a good console.

But, why was there even a 64DD?! It could have just been the N64 itself, with the disks and everything! Then there would be less problems with the release!

But remember that Nintendo didn't want to do the same thing Atari and Sega and other disk-based consoles did and Nintendo worried about their disk console being a failure and they didn't want their console to become a Sega Mega-CD or an Jaguar CD.

So that's my rant-thing. Hope you enjoyed.

The Dreamcast was already doing internet browsing, so I guess this was a case of Nintendo trying to keep up with Sega.

And with that thought, I really miss the days when the two big companies were Nintendo and Sega. The two of them were great rivals, and their rivalry really kept each other on their toes.

I heard that the 64DD was a commercial failure, which is why it stopped.
