I'm not here to talk about politics - but there's some dumb law going around in our country
And with the upcoming presidential election, it's not being taken care of. It's being covered completely when there are angry screams going around the Internet.

I REPEAT: THIS ISN'T ABOUT POLITICS. IT'S A SOCIETY PROBLEM.

Stupid Laws and the negative effects:

1. The Shutdown Law

- anyone under the age of 16 are banned from playing online games from midnight to 6 in the morning. Games which require you to register your age automatically bans you if you are under 16. Console games like Pokemon are not included.

Intention: to prevent internet gaming addiction and protect young children.

Negative Effects:
- an underage professional gamer participating in an international gaming competition was forced to lose due to being kicked out of the server because of The Shutdown Law.

- more children are "borrowing" their parents'/siblings ID to play games at night anyways.

2. The Laws to Protecting Young Children and Teens

- Banning Porn Content:
Any films, videos, games - literally ANYTHING that can be seen with eyes - that depicts young children/teens (OR people that LOOK like young kids/teens) in a sexual/romantic action or relationship are banned. Complete or partial nudity, or actions that make readers/watchers feel sexually offended are banned.

Intention: to prevent children being depicting in porn content, and to protect underage citizens from potential sexual violence/harassment/and the like.

Negative effects:

- a graphic novel artist who draws about sexual education has been reported to the police.

- free expression of art is now being tested among the internet. One wrong move and it's off to the police for you.

- prize money for reporting above content are now threatening potential innocent victims - fan girls, otakus, and many other people who are not even associated with porn.

    Korea. There was a law before this that prevented everyone from playing online games from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM, but this was proved to be ineffective so this was canceled. (Pokemon Global Link was among the websites targeted.) Currently, adults (I'm not sure about the age tbh) are excluded. Now comes this. Wow.

    @Bomika;

    Yes, adults are excluded, but it's still being ineffective because kids can easily borrow their older siblings IDs without difficulty, and they can fake their registration. There are more online games being tested, and that incident of the underage professional gamer being kicked out of the server during an important competition resulted in an uproar - the law practically made him unable to WORK, unable to earn money. In social terms, he has a job, yet the law is hindering it further.

    And the protection law for kids/teens are resulting in a lot of problems throughout the net. The prize money for reporting said content is quite large, and some people are reporting doujin groups, communities, and other internet sites where "fangirls" are expressing their imaginations through fanfics and fanarts. My blogging neighbors and cafes now switched to private mode, and some bloggers said they won't accept neighbors anymore for their own safety.

    This is all just crazy. While I do like the idea of protecting children, this is far from 'protecting' anybody, and the freedom of expression is being stomped upon. The law enforcement are now watching the servers, IPs, and even text messages are being filtered. The question is: why they're not using more people to protect children out in the streets where the real danger lurks.

    My problem with number 1 is that I wouldn't be able to survive.

    @Dark Blueberry; the idea of intruding everyone's privacy just for preventing addiction to internet games and/or porn disgusts me too. Internet blogs could be acceptable area, if the problem was that serious. Text messages are more of a private communication though.
    If their aim is to reduce sexual assault crime rate, there are factors that have more influence to that other than porn. Such as the poor level of sex education in schools here - it remains a continuous issue yet they haven't devoted much to improve this overall. Basically they're not going for the core factors of the problem - they're 'beating the bush' instead. It doesn't help that the authorities in charge of this kind of stuff are sort of biased. The same authorities that rated some songs as 19 or above just because they had the words 'smoking' and 'beer' are in charge of running this new law. Not really surprising.
    @Dragonfyre; it wasn't that bad tbh. The shutdown law applied for those six hours only. I found it annoying but just adjusted my time using the Dream World in the evening. xD

    @Bomika;
    Yup. Really ridiculous. They're even looking through Kakao Talks.

    The main problem is, that when the criminals are taken to court, they are said to have computers filled with porn content and so the authorities immediately make an announcement that porn is the reason for sexual violence and it should be banned - especially the ones featuring children.

    But face it - how many adults in this world haven't watched porn (or any sexual content of that matter) at least once? Not all porn-fans go rape children in broad daylight, and not all criminals commit a crime as 'a result of watching porn'. The law itself is completely missing the point and they're making everything far-fetched.

    @Dark Blueberry; To be sarcastic, if they want to beat the bush, they should do it properly and ban alcohol instead. -w- More crimes (of any crime, be it violence, sexual assault, automobile accidents) are related to the criminals having been drunk, at least more than some internet contents do. -_-;

    You can't really blame them for crafting a stupid law since if I'm not mistaken there are people (a lot of people) in your country who don't know how to set some god damn boundries. Yes the law is stupid but I believe in forgiveness and reserve.

    WAIT they ban ALL porn fuck those guys.

    @Dark Blueberry; So, if this is a law happening in Korea, does it take affect on people outside?
  10. Spectrum Achromatic's Avatar
    @User_Name; Not sure if it affects people outside of the country. But probably just minimum reaction would be triggered: in the case of the first law, the incident of the underage gamer being kicked out of the server during an international competition, it resulted in confusion and reactions of "what kind of f***ing law bans someone from working on their job?!" from international gamers.
