    It was tedious then, though. I'd rather just walk through the grass and flee or buy a repel.

    It isn't quite so tedious in Emerald if your Cutter has the Ability Hyper Cutter. Besides, it's an alternative option if:

    A. you don't have Repels.
    B. the wild Pokémon are too high-level for Repels to work.

    I did that to avoid some of the tall grass when I was running low on HP and out of potions. Tedious, but it really works if you wanted to avoid wild pokemon battles. It would've been nice if they left it, though.

    I did it when wild Pokémon angered me and had to punish them by destroying their habitat.

    They seriously need to bring this back, especially for routes that have a ton of tall grass on the main path. It's annoying having to sift through tons of grass on an area that's on the main path.
