I hate it when my parents can't see I'm growing up!

So I'm eating dinner with my dad, and he asks me what I did today. So I told him I just relaxed and watched an anime called Soul Eater.

Next thing I know, He starting to say that he's worried about me getting involved with Anime/Manga, because a volume of Rosario+Vampire I left lying out had a panty shot! He's now freaking out and going ballistic saying I can't read anymore manga and that I'll turn into a pervert!

News flash father, I'll be 17 this June! I've watched more scandalous and less then innocent american movies and TV shows, some of which I've watched with you! And I've never given you a hard time with that porno you watch called "Game of Thrones"!

Instead of simply freaking out, I just told him that he was overreacting and walked away. Doesn't help the massive anger induced headache I'm suffering from now though!

Long story short, Don't take away my Manga or Anime, or the fangs and claws will come out!

*Rant over*

I felt the same way a long time ago, only not to my parents (they didn't mind my interest in anime and manga much at all). To my 8th grade teacher, actually. We were NOT allowed to bring manga to school because it was "inappropriate content" and "not proper reading material". I got in trouble for bringing Cardcaptor Sakura of all things. But for some reason, she allowed American comic books, which contained even MORE "adult material" than childrens' manga series. I always thought that was stupid. If you're going to ban manga from your classroom, ban American comic books too. Ban comics in general. Pick one or the other. Cultural biases always disgust me. Assuming all comics are just for kids or adults disgusts me.

I wish you the best of luck keeping your interest of anime and manga away from your parents' ignorance.

Just like when you're ten and parents think going onto YouTube puts you under immediate and unavoidable threat from pedophiles and inappropriate videos.

^ I'm twenty and my mom still thinks that. My mom thinks that everyone on Bulba is a dangerous sex offender, lying about their entire lives.

Haha. I've told my family about this forum and they pretty much think all the members are 12 year olds with it being Pokemon and all :b

Sometimes my brother wanders into the room and says "oh you're on that bulbasaur forum again" >:I

In terms of my families attitude, they are very laid back. I was encouraged to ditch the Disney movies for horrors.

Jesus Christ, when I was seventeen, I wasn't into Anime/Manga much, but I was a serious bookworm. Most of the books that I read back were a LOT worse than any of the manga that I've read (I pretty much went through most of Stephen King's books when I was in high school). Funny thing is, most parents wouldn't care (or even know what's between the covers), because "reading is teh good."

And most popular (and semi-popular) anime is pretty tame compared to a lot of the live action crime shows that are currently on television.

I don't get people... if it's Japanese media, it's gotta be bad, even when it's pretty tame compared to a lot of what is popular in English speaking countries.

Well unfortunatly there are many Steriotypes involved here. One of the biggest ones is that you father seems to think all anime/manga is bad. it is part age difference but i am sure your dad probily saw some of the raunchy animes that came out in the 80s and 90s which may have set his mind. Also your age is also a factor too. many parents would be upset if they found their kid with material that they would deem questionable. I can understand why he would be mad by finding that book of Rosirio Vampire.I do think he is a bit over reacting. SOul eater is not a bad anime in terms of content but there are a few scenes i wouldnt show my parents because i think they may find it questionable. My parents dont really care too much about the anime i watch (i dont watch too much anyways). i dont watch some of the more rougher shows such as Samurai Champloo or Blue Exorcist in front of them out of respect. i havnt bought the dvds of either shows because i am sure my parents would eventually get curious one random day and watch it. im not willing to take a risk like that and possibly getting kicked out of the house. my parents told me i can buy what i want when i have my own place and i am more than happy to comply with that. my parents do give me a lot of freedom in what i watch but i always try to stay within respectable limits. Iwould sugest showing your father maeby something the the BW Pokemon adventure manga to see if that would help change his mindset

It honestly drives me insane how closed minded people can be... How's it any different then the fan service in Game of Thrones or The Twilight Saga.

Most people, if they don't understand it, it automatically becomes taboo...
