Team Rotation

For those of you who don't know, I did a run of several Pokemon games with an anime-styled storyline; I'd give myself a starter to carry it through multiple games, imagined travelling partners, and added stories to justify grinding. ("That wild Croagunk? It stole my Badge, I have to get it back!") I also tried my hand at rotating teams and catching Pokemon only relevant to that Region. (No Kanto/Sinnoh/Unova/Hoenn Pokemon were captured in Johto, unless they evolved into a Johto Pokemon. The only exception to the rule was an Eevee I got in Unova, because it was relevant to my character's story, and Benga's Dratini.) This journey has spanned through HeartGold, Platinum, and White 2 on Hard Mode. It will continue in Y, because it's been too much fun to abandon.

My favorite part was rotating my team around. I had to make sure each Pokemon was in at least two Gyms. (Which means I could theoretically rotate a team of 16 Pokemon and they could all get experience.) I would often go out on the field with Pokemon I picked out randomly, so I wouldn't rely on the same few Pokemon. I kept my starter, Heracross, on me at all times, of course. In HeartGold, I had a team of about 8. In Sinnoh, 7. (I really wish I caught more.) In Unova, my team expanded to about 10. In Unova's post-game, I added 13 more, giving my Unova team 23 Pokemon to work with. 23 was too much to juggle all at once and keep them all properly trained, along with my starter, but they still got a lot of use in the World Tournament.

I highly suggest that everyone gives rotation a shot. In Generation V, now that weaker Pokemon can gain experience faster, and with an abundance of Audino, it's the perfect chance to try and rotate. I suggest starting small, with a team of 8 or 9. That way, you don't get overwhelmed.

For reference, my current Unova team is: Heracross, Emboar, Serperior, Dewott, Hydreigon, Unfezant, Lilligant, Krookodile, Cinccino, Vanillish, Mienshao, Bouffalant, Dragonair, Duosion, Umbreon, Frillish, Dragonair, Karrablast, Axew/Fraxure, Archen, Lillipup, Yamask, Roggenrola, Larvesta, and Zorua. I'll also mix in my older Pokemon whenever I feel like it.

Very interesting, I think I might follow your lead in the next Pokémon game I play. Didn't Heracross become overleveled after the first game (and hence hard to justify using in the early stages of each game) though?

That's why I breed a new Heracross for each game. I make sure to have the same ability and nature for consistency. And since since a lot of moves can be passed down, it makes it easier to pretend that it's the same Pokemon.

I didn't actually breed a new Heracross until I needed to, since Heracross was around level 40 when I battled the Johto Elite Four, and Sinnoh had you reach the mid-forties a lot sooner. The training in both Regions allowed it to work very well in HeartGold's Kanto.

Instate a krabby clause where you can catch a pokémon as long as it evolves during and beats at least one pokemon in the league.

Also you should occasionally release pokemon for dramatic reasons you come up with.

I'm going that in the next game: I'm getting one of the reserves I rarely use (Charmander, Squirtly, or Roggenrola are my top three pics) and have them do that.

And I did release my Druddigon for such purposes. And by "release," I mean I put it in a random Box so I can recall it 10 years later.

I do that too! It's really fun! In Black and White it was Simisage, Samurott, Pikachu, Chandelure, Zoroark, Haxorus, Hydreigon, Excadrill, Emolga, Vanilluxe, Krookodile, Swanna, Reuniclus.

In HG, so far I'm starting clean on the starter and it's Metapod, Chikortia, and Gastly. About to take on Falkner.

@Contrary; I'm surprised you remembered(Oh the nostalgia when Gen 5 was all new) and yes it was. Was the Cinccino "Daisy?"

No, Daisy's been left in White to rot :-P (Yay you remembered!) This one's the Minccino from Route 5's Hidden Grotto.
