The version I watched had these weird cards that explained what the characters were saying. The first time I watched it, the cards were in German. (Since at the time I wanted to learn German.)

I can understand why people like it, as it was a creative film. But I felt it tried really hard to be deep. It had a few great ideas, but they were all just sort of crammed in all at once, so the movie was a bit of a mess. And I really didn't like any of the characters, aside from the fat girl who had a crush on Donnie. (I think it was because he was the only person nice to her? But she can really do better than an angsty, emo nihilist.)
