Pokemon Direct, and my real opinion on Mega Evos

Okay, for the past few months I have been fine with the new information that Pokemon X/Y has been giving out, but the recent Pokemon Direct just wasn't my cup of tea. Now don't get me wrong, I am still getting X/Y and my money has been saved up for them for the past several months, but this is just something that turned me off.

We did get the starter evolutions, but we got the Mega-evolutions of the Kanto starters instead, rather than the evolutions to the Kalos starters like I have been hoping for, and I honestly WASN'T surprised that they were going to give the Gen 1 starters Mega-Evolutions. Look, Charizard is a great Pokemon and I have no problem with the Gen 1 starters at all, but here I feel like they were just strictly appealing to the Gen 1 fans (as well as the Genwunners), and were just pandering to the base rather than actually focusing on the new Pokemon from Gen 6. I just wanted to know if Chespin really was an armadillo based Pokemon, if Froakie was a ninja frog, and finally douse the flames of people complaining if Fennekin will be Fire/Fighting or not (I still want Fire/Psychic), but I was just turned off by what happened here. Well, better hopes for CoroCoro later this month.

Back in August, I wrote a blog talking about the Mega Evolutions, saying that people should not worry about the addition of new concepts like this, but I never stated my real opinion on the Mega Evolutions because I had not developed it yet at the time, I only stated my stance on the situation in the fandom.

First off, I am perfectly fine with the concept of Mega Evolutions, it's not my favorite idea they've had in Gen 6, and definitely not the worst concept they've concieved (that would have to be Pokemon Musicals), but there are only two things about them that just bug me:

The first thing is that to me, I feel like Mega Evolutions are just an excuse to not make any new evolutions or pre-evos to older Pokemon, I mean have you noticed that almost all the Mega Evolutions revealed so far are either Pokemon that are popular in the fandom (Mewtwo, Lucario, Ampharos) or Pokemon people wanted there to be evos/pre-evos of (Kangaskhan, Mawile, Absol). I feel like Game Freak is just saying "Oh, we're going to make those evolutions you've been asking for, but they're just going to be temporary formes instead of actual evolutions, muahahahahahaha!"

The other thing about Mega Evolutions that just bugs me, and it's something that's been around since Gen 3, but has been becoming a bigger problem as of Gen 5, and that thing is formes. Formes started out as an interesting concept, it started out as Deoxys and it was pretty interesting, then Shaymin and Giratina got them and it was fine, but then in Gen 5 they just went overboard and gave a bunch of Pokemon formes when they didn't even need them, such as the Kami Trio, Keldeo, and Kyurem, and while I like Keldeo's resolution forme, none of these Pokemon I think really even needed formes at all, now I feel like they are just introducing formes for the sake of making formes.

No offense to anyone who likes or hates Mega Evolutions, I respect your opinion, and I still prefer the regular forms regardless, but this is just my opinion on the Mega Evolutions, I'm still getting X/Y regardless of this stuff.
Isaac Gravity likes this.

I don't think that doesn't mean they won't never make evolutions for Pokemon getting Mega evolutions, or I at least hope that's not the case. The official site states that Mega Evolutions are a , a transformation found only in the Kalos region/ which makes me think they're something exclusive to X and Y and whatever gen VI games we get. So I can still see Pokemon like Mawile and Absol getting regular evolutions. Maybe not this generation, but maybe in the future or so I hope that's right.

I feel the same about Gamefreak using it as an excuse for no evos/pre-evos.

Y'know, I wouldn't have minded the (over)emphasis on Mega Evolution during this direct if it wasn't used just to shill the Gen I Starters and to waste time reminiscing on the old days or the damn Pokemon game timeline (again). Was Charizard and "ultimate Pokemon" really used in the same sentence...? Just ugh.

At least the Bank/Transfer got noted so there's SOMETHING related and new to Gen VI and I noticed the Male PC in one screenshot wore a hat but had a different hair style. But that was it.

Oh and it seems we're of different opinion, far as I'm concerned, Amity Square was the worst concept they've made into being.

I wouldn't say that, whenever a new generation comes out they always say that *insert new gen Pokemon here* can only be found in *insert new gen region here* when in later games they're always in the wild of other regions, and whenever a new concept like this is introduced, it is almost NEVER taken out and becomes prominent in every following game. The only chance they would make them ONLY available in Kalos is if they become so unpopular in the later half of the generation that they take the concept out entirely in Gen 7 with no mention of them at all.

Same, the only real evolution we've gotten this generation so far is Sylveon, and I'm not really too big on the Eeveelutions, so yeah.

I agree, I was hoping for some new features and Pokemon, but like last month's CoroCoro, it was basically another Mega-fest, this one being worse than the last one since it was nothing more than a nostalgia trip to appeal to the Gen 1 lovers, and I'm like "Seriously, save the nostalgia trip for the Hoenn remakes please."

On the subject of that, another problem I have with Mega Evos is that they keep giving them to Pokemon that already have more than enough popularity, like Lucario, and this pushes unpopular and overlooked Pokemon like Floatzel and Mienshao further back into the shadows.

Also, I don't like how you have to buy the transferring method as a separate app for the 3DS, as in the past it was always in the game and always free, but now you have to spend extra money and get it on Wi-Fi just to send Pokemon from Gen 5 to Gen 6, I mean really, aren't we being money whores much Nintendo? On the subject of money, the Bank app is a bit unnecessary, especially since many of us fight trainers so much that our wallets are filled to the brim that we don't need the bank to exist, but that's just me...

And while Amity Square was a bit lame in my opinion, it did give us the walking Pokemon that would appear in HG/SS, so give them credit for that.
