Before Pokemon Direct was dropped on us all by Iwata, Junichi masuda hyped up the presentation and told us to show it to everyone we know. So I decided to honor his request today.

Today when I was out, I showed some classmates the Nintendo Direct. They were general nintendo fans, but mostly indifferent to Pokemon.

We got all nostalgic as Iwata went through the first history lesson. We get some discussion going around when they start giving their favorites and assessments of which generation it started going "downhill". Pokemon design "weirdness" inevitably pops up, but I laugh it off and gave them the scenario of the new kids growing up with pokemon now saying that the new pokemon were weird and that "it was better when it was at 5th gen". The parts that went on and got more recent, and they got filled in on stuff they didn't know, like the double or tag battles. They talk about how there's too many Pokemon in the game now and I tell them to look at it in the sense that there's more variety and that the games dropped the "catch em all" slogan they were used to so long ago while still retaining their gameplay. Meanwhile we talk about a funny pokememe here or there. I also explained to them the hype that led up to this announcement just as Iwata dropped the bomb.

And then I let the trailer speak for itself.

I get a bunch of "wows" from everyone, and one of them complements the art style. I give them my own opinions on how well they made the battles resemble the concept so well. One of the girls thinks Fennekin is cute too. Also, they thought the music was awesome, and I explained to them the nature of the Pokemon flagship overture. And someone shouted "princess mononoke!" while I sympathized with him on the look.

Overall, they were pretty impressed. I gave them some additional info and speculation on what the legendaries' origins were, as well as talking about the extreme speed of the fanbase and their art explosion. In the end, they generally said something along these lines:

"I haven't really played Pokemon, but I think this would be a good place to start. I just don't know though... there's so many of them now."

It's a start...

Alright, I stayed up all night to catch the Nintendo direct live with everyone else on the Ustream. I have to say, it was worth it, and it knocked me out delerious for the whole day.

After 22 hours of blinding excitement, it's time to collect some comprehensive thoughts of mine for the trailer:

Firstly, the graphical presentation:

I really like how this game looks overall. The overworld design appears to easily rival that of the BW2 gyms, and the trainers still keep their "chibi" charm very well. In battle, however, is the part that really impresses me. Looking closely, one can see the wind blow across the fields, and the grass wave back and forth (like BW2's subtle edits); we've got less abstract backgrounds too (although not Pokestar-Studios-level of detail unfortunately; I hope they eventually get to that point). The best part is that the shader they applied on the Pokemon themselves makes them look almost exactly like the style of their Sugimori art.

That kind of shading is very subtle but extremely signature of the Pokemon style, and I'm thankful at how it was conserved in the model. I have no regrets leaving sprites, although it will always be wonderful to see what the fanbase will cook up in the official devs' stead.

The attack animations are all pretty convincing. There's a real lot of impact going on everywhere from Chespin firing his death ray at defenseless floundering magikarp, to Litwick burning the literal hell out of Psyduck with its Inferno, to Froakie doing whatever that sneaky dash move was on the Patrat. I am really left wondering how many animations these guys have to express. Meinfoo's execution of Aura Sphere and Froakie's sneak attack didn't look like something overly generic that was applicable to any attack; at least not of their category.

I do hope, however, that they properly snap the action points to the proper places on the Pokemon.

You may also note a mismatched shadow in Chespin's arena picture. They're missing the little things that add a little extra consistency to the battle scene. I'm pretty sure this was all covered since Stadium, so I hope they clean this kind of stuff up!

Game Freak have been known to play things pretty safe when it came to design and hardware use, and the graphics aren't necessarily a technical feat. That being said, however, they do seem to know very well where to direct their resources to: the art style. I think that their leap into full 3D finally being this generation may not only be influenced by their conservativeness, but also that 3-D wasn't really ready to be used to properly fulfill the vision they had in mind for it. I am very glad at how it finally turned out, and hope it improves at the end of October.

Secondly, the characters...

The main protagonist is alright for me. More of the same character style, for both genders, it's all good. He does have that french feel to him though... or maybe that's just his expression somehow to me. Character customization would be nice, and those shots that expose the glasses as detachable meshes from the character certainly give it a hint of credibility. I'm not holding my breath, though.

All 3 of the starters get my approval. None of that "time to warm up", or "five stages of pokemon introduction grief" stuff. I thought they were at least B-grade "neat" after seeing each and every one of them for the first time. I'm sure Fennekin will appeal to the widest amount of audience that expect Pokemon to be animals (I'm already seeing more fan art of it than others, especially anthropomorphizations such as gijinka), while Chespin will make those who adore cutesy things squeal with a delight not seen since Pachirisu. Meanwhile, Froakie will capture the hearts of all who enjoy the unusual and quirky. He certainly does have a charm that takes a different approach from direct cuteness, as opposed to the others... That being said, I am going to have a seriously hard time deciding who to pick this gen. Leaning a bit towards Chespin right now ever so slightly.

And then, legendaries. I think they're both alright. Looked a bit strange to me at first, but I was no doubt impressed. And more so after all of the X and Y motifs behind their design (especially the "horizontal and vertical axis" part) were pointed out. The deer gives me Princess Mononoke vibes, although not enough so for me to say it was ripped from it directly. Both legendaries look very original, and it looks like at least one of them won't be Dragon as per (the apparently forming) tradition.

Lastly, the par that did it for me...

This might be a little weird, but the single part I liked most about the trailer was when they revealed the starter names. Not the starters, but the names. And not just the names, but how they revealed them.

"Chespin!"
"Chespin!"
"Marisson!"
"Igamaro!"
"Harimaron!"

"Fennekin!"
"Fennekin!"
"Feunnec!"
"Fynx!"
"Fokko!"

"Froakie!"
"Froakie!"
"Grenousse!"
"Froxy!"
"Keromatsu!"

I don't know about you guys, but something just clicked for me when each Pokemon was revealed with every regional name given all in a row like that. It made me feel all warm inside knowing how the rest of the world was right there with me seeing the same new Pokemon. English? Japanese? Italian? It doesn't matter what region you live in or what language you speak; Chespin, Ferrekin, and Froakie are here to meet all of you today.

I had then recalled some earlier education with Chinese i had taken long sho. It had faded a lot over time from disuse, but I was still familiar with some characters. I started substituting some common English words in with the blocky symbols and eventually found myself saving a ton of line space.
I ended up putting much more information on the same block of space than i would have with just english. Now I really want to learn the rest of the language. Ideograms rock. XD

I currently know it's some sort of badfic, that it's a Sonic and Pokemon crossover, that there's a character called "Yawning Squirtle", and that there is supposed to be some deeply disturbing things about it.

Other than that, I'm completely clueless. Curious, but clueless.

So here I am, asking for some help on properly describing this particular series to me. Would anyone do me that favor before curiosity overtakes me and I potentially go out to read it myself?

When bored in class, my mind wanders off about the 3-D models that the Pokemon people (Specifically Creatures) has made up to this point. We've got Pokedex 3DS and soon will have it expanded to all Pokemon period. No outdated stadium models, no jaggies; everything will be up to standard.

This leads me to think that since the graphic of games has generally gotten to a point of little further improvement, it's the perfect opportunity for them to take the models they've made up to this point and improve on them in other ways. But how?

Answering a question with a question: what would make these pokemon more lifelike?

My mind wanders into the idea of Creatures or Pokemon Company rigging new animations to existing pokemon. 15+ years and the standard 3D battler has, for every pokemon up to now, made attacking, special-attacking, hit, fainted, punching, running, and some flying animations to their pokemon. Maybe kicking... was there kicking?

But anyways, attacks have a huge amount of variety to them. And I start to think of what kinds of attacks would need a specific type of animation from the pokemon's own model to show a deeper form of personality. Perhaps they could be sorted into groups, albeit many.

I ended up writing down a list, for the sake of just making one:

Hit
Faint
Punching - Fire Punch, ThunderPunch, etc.
Slapping - DoubleSlap, Wake-up Slap, etc.
Kicking - Mega Kick, Blaze Kick, etc.
Running
Flying - Fly
Tackling - Tackle, Take Down, Flame Charge, etc.
Throwing - Vital Throw, Seismic Toss, Rock Throw, etc.
Staring - Leer, Glare, Scary Face, etc.
Squashing - Body Slam, Heavy Slam, etc.
Shooting - IMMA FIRIN MAH HYPER BEAM
Biting - Bite, Crunch, Hyper Fang, Thunder Fang, etc.
Rolling - Rollout, Ice Ball, Flame Wheel, etc.
Kissing - Sweet Kiss, etc.
Jumping - Bounce, etc.
Shooting Up - Eruption, Water Spout, Thunder, etc.
Shouting - Supersonic, Echoed Voice, etc.
Diving - Dive, Dig, etc.
Pecking - Peck, Drill Peck, etc.
Jabbing - Poison Jab, Fury Attack, etc.
Spinning - Rapid Spin, Gyro Ball, etc.
Wrapping - Wrap, Constrict, etc.

Perhaps there were more... but by then, class had let out. :P
