It's so hard being vegetarian

in a family of meat eaters. Le sigh...

My brother and step-father are avid meat eaters. And everyday I have to watch them eat animals. It's disgusting, really. And my step-father always insults me saying I only eat herbs like a cow. And when I told him it felt wrong for me to eat innocent animals he went on rambling for hours how humans are supposed to be atop of the food chain. And when I tried to tell him about how human anatomy is not designed for humans to be exclusively meat-eaters he told me "but you are no doctor, are you?"

So I basically learned how to cook to feed myself and stay alive because in my town there is the great amount of three vegan restaurants (luckily for me two of them are within a 5 block radius from my house) and I can't go to many places cause all they have is meat, with meat sauce and meat.

So it's a hard lifestyle. But I don't care!! It's environmentally-friendly, good for health and I just could never eat animals... they have feelings too you know. So yeah

Convictions FTW!!

I can't feel for you because I eat meat. But I can say that it's not fair to be mocked for a life decision. It's your choice.

Technically, we evolved to be able to eat whatever's available, be it meat or plants, but yeah, I think we've developed technologically and scientifically past the point where eating meat is necessary to survive.
    Kudos to you!

We have canines for tearing through meat and molars for grinding plants

    We were designed for both
    Its just...harder for you,
I believe meat tastes amazing, but i believe that animals should only be killed for study and for well...food...But they should have lived they're lives calmly or die non-barbaric, which is my only qualms with the food industry, the fact that they treat animals like shit...

Oh, I have a few non-carnivorous friends. I see what you mean, keep trucking. And yes animals have feelings too.

More and more resturants are offering vegan/vegertairian options where I live, so look around, you might find some options in unexpected places. I know because my mom is one too.

Oh yes, I was a vegan at one point for your same reasons and I know how unfair it is to be mocked for it. But the thing is that you can't really get emotional or be what could be seen as a know-it-all about it to most people because when you get passionate about the "cause", if you will, people go on the defence, because you end up implying they're doing something very wrong. I can't sympathise too much because I eat meat now and I will admit I love it, but I don't think how you've been treated is fair regardless; my family at worst tolerated my choice.

@Iron Defense and @Kazuhira - Yes, techinically we are designed to eat almost anything. But as any doctor can tell you, we should eat more grains/vegetables/fruits than meat or dairy. But society has developed in a way in which we eat 90% meat and hardly any greens. I say gotta keep it balanced.

@Secretive Trainer - yeah I agree but that's people for you. My silly step-father thinks eating animals is real manly and if I eat a carrot or a piece of broccoli I'm a "pussy". WTF

@Meryn - LOL yeah I agree. I don't intend to get "preachy" but it gets on my nerves, really. I don't go around bashing people for eating plastic or whatever they like. Like I say, live and let live

You know, calling their meat-eating habits 'disgusting' is just as judgmental on your part. And, just as you said our bodies weren't designed to eat meat exclusively, they weren't designed to eat just vegetation exclusively either. We're omnivores, a healthy diet of both is good for everyone.

Problem is, there are some things we just can't stand. When you don't understand how someone feels about vegetables, and complain about them not understanding how you feel about eating meat... well, you're both in the wrong. Just as a vegan might not be able to eat meat without getting sick, some people truly have a hard time trying to stomach some of what our friends love and refer to as their "Rabbit Food".

Eating meat doesn't make you manly. Also, "manliness" is overrated.
Meat simply tastes good, but conversely, setting aside land and crops for the production of meat when they could be used to grow more crops or feed people directly seems horribly inefficient. Sure, near-barren grasslands that can't support farms might be alright, but setting aside prime farmland to raise meat, eggs and dairy is a waste. You know what, veganism is sounding better and better, are there any resources you use to help you with it? Especially on how and where to get produce cheaply?

As Hallowheart said, there are two sides to this. Personally, I eat meat. Personally, I don't care if you're vegetarian. If you come to my place for dinner, I'll make you something without meat in it because I know that's a choice some people make. However, if you sit there and carry on about how eating animals is wrong and disgusting and we should all be ashamed, then yes, I'm going to get offended.

Also, who in hell eats a 90% meat diet? In my house, a meal (dinner) is maybe a quarter meat, with the rest of the plate filled with vegetables. It's all a part of a rounded diet, though I won't blab on about needing protein etc etc, because I actually don't know too much about it. Lunch might be a sandwich with a couple slices of ham, lettuce and cheese, an apple and a muesli bar, and breakfast is just cereal at least six days a week, usually seven. (Sometimes breakfast on a Sunday is bacon and eggs, which is fair enough.) The point is, I don't actually eat as much meat as you've suggested people do, and I don't know anyone else who does that. For one thing, meat is expensive. Buying enough meat to almost fill the plates of four people every night would cost far more than replacing most of that meat with an equivalent amount of carrots, potatoes, broccoli and peas.

Also, meat-eating being manly is just bull. It's not even worth arguing that point, because anyone foolish enough to make it is probably foolish enough not to realise it's utter rubbish.

Never in my life have I ever heard anyone older than 8 say they have a problem with vegetables / crudites. Though that might partially be because they don't want to look like an 8 year old in front of others. Must be a cultural thing or something.
