people think 5 de mayo is a celebration? Am I missing something?

An internet friend just wished me a happy 5 de mayo. And I'm like...

I mean we get the day off in my country... but I've never seen anyone celebrate it... I guess from now on I will throw a party on 5 de mayo

ITs supposed to be when Mexico fought off france when they were very VERY VERY underprepared and undersupplied (they might as well have fought with sticks and rocks)
