After everyone finding it amusing that Venusaur is a carnivorous monster, I decided to do more science about Pokemon with spooky abilities. @AmphiGamer; suggested that I look into the wizardly abilities of
Meganium, the Herb Pokemon.
As with Venusaur, Meganium is an old Pokemon and therefore has quite a few Pokedex entries. They generally refer to it's amazing ability to breathe on plants and bring them back to life or the fact that it can somehow calm other Pokemon. It has a variety of moves including Petal Dance, Aromatherapy and Synthesis.
Again, similar to Venusaur, the Synthesis is probably due to hybrid animal-plant cells containing chloroplasts, giving it the ability to make it's own food. Unlike Venusaur, Meganium does not have razor sharp teeth and is unlikely to attempt ravaging a poor unsuspecting Doduo. In fact, looking at it's design and entries, it is more likely to be the prey than the hunter. Now let's do some science!
Meganium can breathe on plants to bring them back to life. In the real word, this would likely be impossible. Then again, in the real world old men don't give ten year old children fire breathing lizards to fight with. So we'll have to suspend our disbelief a little. Plants need four things to survive- soil, air, light and water. Perhaps Meganium has a sort of super Aromatherapy concentrate chemical in it's breath. Perhaps there's some sort of hybrid cell in it's alveoli (little tree things in it's lungs which are used in exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of the blood). Hey, there's an idea- what if Meganium has a strange blood composition containing a kind of super-duper haemoglobin (chemical in red blood cells that carries oxygen) that has a concentration of all 4 things needed for plant life to support it's enormous plant dinosaur body. And when it breathes out, some of it is passed out of the body, mixing with it's breath. Maybe that then helps bring dead plants back to life. Who knows? Maybe the old dude forcing children to complete and encyclopedia about extremely dangerous animals. Why don't you ask him? Bitch.
The other aspect is it's ability to calm agrresive feelings with a scent from it's petals. For the most part it's just lovey-dovey propaganda. But then there's a few dubious ones-
"The fragrance of Meganium's flower soothes and calms emotions. In battle, this Pokémon gives off more of its becalming scent to blunt the foe's fighting spirit."
First, may I point out that blunting the enemy's spirit during battle is a dick move. Secondly, notice the word blunt. It means to dull out. I get the impression from most of it's Pokedex entries that Meganium is dulling out any other Pokemon in it's general vicinity. So then I realized this. All these substances for anti-hate come from it's flowers. It's enormous, big red flowers. Can you think of a red flower for me? Oh yeah! Poppy! That one flower than contains small amounts of morphine and codeine and is used in the creation of opium. Of course, you could argue that it's a big geranium around the dinosaur's neck, but geraniums don't make you high. I think.
So Meganium's stoner powers are created by a sort of super-evolved poppy. Ingenious! Now I've ruined 2 grass type starters!
Yo, if you liked this, please leave a comment about which Pokemon with dubious powers you want me to delve into next time!
