Outside the Pokémon fandom, the TCG is probably one of the most recognizable aspects of the franchise. You could make a case for it having largely generated the modern preconceptions of a trading card game (or, I suppose, the entirety of what some call childrens' card games ). When people think of Pokémon, the TCG is usually one of the first things they think of.
And yet within the fandom, the TCG is quite possibly the smallest of the various fandom niches. Weird.
My theory for this: You can't ship trading cards very well.

I'm not so sure about this. At least in the US, the early anime (particularly the opening) is arguably the most recognizable aspect.

I agree with Yunabomb, no one really remembers the TCG in the US. Early anime is the big stuff here

TCG one most recognizable? What do you have to back up this claim? Yeah, the franchise basically has three major divisions: Games, Anime, TCG, so "one of" is probably correct, but hardly "one of the first things they think of." unless they remember having their cards taken away as a child.

I realize that I did absolutely no research on this, and that it's difficult to quantify what other people know and don't know, but that's generally the impression I get from people outside the fandom (by which I mostly mean people who have never had anything to do with Pokémon at all). There are, in all likelihood, countless parents, teachers, and principals who remember when Pokémon was at its late Nineties/early Aughts zenith and the cards were freaking everywhere (mainly because of the trouble they tended to cause).
Again, this is all completely speculative, so please don't take it too seriously. In fact, I should probably change the 'Musings' folder to 'Don't Take this shit Too Seriously'.

Where I live, among teens it's Gen I or the Indigo League/Early Anime, while most of the people who were adults remember it for the cards.

As for the most Niche, it's probably the Manga, as there are plenty of TCG freaks on YT and PokeBeach, while the manga is somewhat obscure to those outside the fandom. I saw a review of PokeSpe in an Anime Magazine that said it was mehish.
