#331, 331: Cacnea & Cacturne

As promised for Baron Dante, here's Cacnea and Cacturne
Cacnea is an interesting Pokemon. It seems to be based off of both a cactus and a jack-o-lantern. The hallowed out eye and mouth holes and the stripes on the front of its body give it the look of a jack-o-lantern, but the green color and spikes all over its body as well as the stripes all make it seem cactus-like. There's really nothing bad about Cacnea's look, but there's nothing which makes it stand out extraordinarily. I will say that I don't understand the deal with the crown at all. I get that Cacnea evolves and the crown turns into Cacturne's big scarecrow hat, but the crown on Cacnea looks strange. I don't know if I'd like it more if it weren't there, but I think it clashes a bit with the rest of Cacnea's design. I like that there's something there, were Cacnea bald it might have looked worse. The thing is, I don't think a crown was the best way to go about filling this gap. Otherwise Cacnea is great: the spiked club arms, the pointy spike feet, the patterns under and above the face, and basically everything about Cacnea looks good. While its mostly only green, the color definitely suits it, and there is enough variety of color to make it look nice. The darker green of the spikes and the diamonds on its chest compared with the lighter green of the rest of its body, the yellow crown, and the black eye and mouth features look great together. Typically I think the third generation was the worst for Pokemon designs, but Cacnea is one of the non-legendary Pokemon that sticks out. It's a great looking non-evolved Pokemon.

First off, Cacturne is one of the scariest Pokemon ever made. It looks like some kind of demented doll-cactus-scarecrow. Now having said that, there's some really great scary features that Cacturne has, but there's some other features which don't look so great. Cacturne's whole face is great. While very similar to Cacnea's face, Cacturne's smile is a little more extended and the eyes are now yellow. These both make it look nice and scary, and the hat covering most of Cacturne's face just adds to that. The hat itself looks great too. The detail to the points of the hat look nice and it's great as a scarecrow hat. The rest of Cacturne's body doesn't look so great. It's decent, but it could have been much better. It looks like a doll, maybe a voodoo doll, which adds a nice scary touch. The diamond patterns along the arms, legs, and chest look great; they resemble stitching on a doll. My issue is that Cacturne looks too much like a doll and not enough like a cactus. I think there should have been more spikes on the hands and feet to make Cacturne not only more like a cactus but also scarier. One of the other major faults which I see is that the torso extends too far and the legs are too short. While it makes Cacturne look more like a doll, it just doesn't seem right. Overall Cacturne is a decent Pokemon but it has lots of small faults, and it just feels like something's missing.
I didn't realize it, but Panpour was my 100th Pokemon reviewed! Woohoo! As of this review I've done 103 and there's 546 left. I'm hoping to put a pretty big dent in that by the end of the summer before school and work start again. As always thanks for reading!
